Join us for an unforgettable New Year's Break in the heart of the Madiran, Pacherenc, Saint Mont and Armagnac vineyards. This unique experience, with comfortable accommodation in a 200 year old manor house, can be reserved as a 3 or 5 day break in the foot hills of the Pyrenées mountains in France.
Ever year, on the 31st of December, the vignerons of Viella harvest the last of their sweet Petit Manseng grapes. These sweet grapes are used to make an exceptional white wine called Pacherenc – often compared to Sauterne in taste and quality. This very late harvest takes place during Viella's extensive end of year festivities that start on the 30th of December with the first performance in the village church of that year's pageant about the birth of Pacherenc, many centuries ago. It is a lavish village affair, with more or less the whole village taking part as actors, singers, dancers, scriptwriters, organisers and décor and costume makers. A substantial amount of Pacherenc is consumed during preparations, to keep voices and hearts warm.
The next day, every one climbs into horse-drawn carts and set of for the harvest early morning, by torch light. A copious casse-croute (breakfast) follows and then it is time to go and explore the street market in the village featuring a large variety of local produce. Lunch is a convivial affair, tables are readied for 100+ guests and on the three course menu typical seasonal Gascon delicacies. The second performance of the Pastorale is scheduled for the afternoon and in the evening the villagers gather to welcome the New Year with a sumptuous feast and dancing lasting well into the early hours of the morning.
