Bottled Gas Experts please!

Dear All,

The hob we have inherited works off bottled gas. The problem we have is that our lovely shiny pans are black and not shiny after we've finished cooking and then requires a good deal of elbow grease and a large amount of Jif (sorry Cif) to remove.

The house has been empty for some time so is it the gas having stood perhaps? Is it the wrong type of gas or dirty pipes? We've scrubbed the whole thing but that's not assisted.

Your thoughts would be appreciated please.

Many thanks in anticipation,

John

These days, most cookers come with one set of jets fitted and an alternative set included with the instructions. The instructions should specify which jets to use for different gas supplies. If the instructions are lost, the manufacturer's should have the information on their website. In the worst-case scenario, you might have to phone their service department.

But John is right, If you don't have an official qualification and insurance, you could be in serious trouble interfering with other people's gas installations.

Any chance I could arrange for a few of my 'rellies' to be there when they fire it up? ;-)

Problem being David, bought in France because it's more expensive is silly and doesn't guarantee the correct size jets either if you don't ask you don't get. The relatives have a commercial cooker they love bought with them from house to house and now in France, it uses a lot of gas being a commercial unit but is it also using more because of the same issue? I won't get involved because there are no thanks and any problem whatsoever even completely unrelated and they blame the last person who touched it and that's not going to be me! Don't care if they put themselves into orbit with it.

Vic,
Amazingly, people manage to survive in our technological world without even a basic understanding of how things work.
It's all in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance."

Makes me wonder if the previous owners actually used it more than once when they found it sooted up their pans & why they didn't declare it wasn't working properly. If I was John I'd be checking on other things if this was not disclosed. Some people really are swines!

Makes you wonder how many more amateur installations are about. "We bought it in the UK because it's cheaper" and then they're too short sighted or tight to have the kit properly installed.

good result for SFN then. Just as we said. Jets too large = too much gas= not enough air = dirty flame. QED :-)

Dear All,

Update - Expert has been around and the previous owners purchased the hob from the UK and it is meant to be used with piped gas and not bottled gas. Having now purchased the jets for bottled gas, it works fine.

Thanks for all your help.

Yours,

John

I concur. Thanks Vic.

John. When seeking advice I think it's important to give folks some idea of ones background. This then makes it easier to judge the level of advice one can offer. Nothing worse than "Teaching your granny to suck eggs" which I've seen happen here time after time . It's not only time wasting it's bloody embarrassing when one offers advice, spells it out in words of one syllable & is finally told that the person seeking advice actually has a good grasp of the subject & is only seeking clarification on a certain point.

Good point.....thanks David. I've purposely left my Royal Navy and RNLI background out of the conversation :-) but have read all the updates with interest, gas, maritime etc.

Thanks Vic. You are a good, straight talker too.
Have a good evening.

Best
Nick

We never used gas on the Black Pig; gimbal mounted charcoal braziers and a bloody big brick oven on the main deck was all we had. Gas in the bilges we never had. Sorry dinner party conversation. Seems to me some black squares get a bit above themselves but that's just me. Oh and by the way Donna the Dutch can call them what they like but in France they're called péniches. As for black pans the only realistic answer is to go to pages jaunes and cherche dépannage gaz. That way you can show the blackened pans to the engineer when he arrives and get things sorted properly.

No worries Nick. No harm done but thanks anyway. I always thought you were a gent which is why I was a little narked at your comments. Yer a good bloke :-)

Vic,
1.You are the last person I’d want to see leave or offend. If I offended you I fully apologise.
2.As admin I do not have any right to ban or suspend anyone.
3. The tedious and oneupmanship had nothing to do with your boat, but more there seemed to be a debate about who knew more about when to turn off a bottle of gas.

So if I offended, then I apologise.

Best regards
Nick

Nick . The day this place becomes a rigid, stick to the OP thing & doesn't engender the dinner party I'm speaking bolloc*s to the person opposite sort of thing I'm out of here. I'm surprised & not a little disappointed that you of all people could use the words " Pugwash and their adventures on the high seas and inland waterways of Europe.
Can we stick to the question please? Otherwise it becomes very tedious and stinks of one-upmanship."

As it was me & Shirley who were talking about boats it's obvious it's us you are talking about. I don't know about Shirl but I'm furious you can use those words here when we were having a polite conversation amongst ourselves. How dare you talk of one- upmanship. I had a boat, so what? It was hardly an ocean going liner. I never mentioned it's size or cost. Are you going to say the same thing about others who mention they have Range Rovers or such like? Where is it going to end?

I can't begin to tell you how pi**sed I am with your comments so if you are not happy with anything I've said then exercise your Admin rights & pull the plug on me 'cos I don't want to be here if I can't talk about my boat & other things that so obviously upset you .

Umm, narrow boats generally cruise the British canals, over here in France they are barges - 38m long by 5.5m wide is not a narrow boat by any stretch of the imagination - ex-bargee speaking here :-)

None at all Andy.

Are there rules on sticking to the subject? I think the beauty of this Forum is the manner people stray off down side roads. If you think it’s tedious don’t read it
