Hello there!  I just started a website called American Woman a la Francaise, and we're looking for some contributors with various areas of expertise...  If you're interested or know of someone, please let me know! :)  Thank you!

Thanks for the civic awarenest boost, one tends to put these things sometimes on the back burner living far from the US. This election, like them all, deserve our focus and participation.

Dearsest Americans Living Abroad!!!! Please cast an absentee ballot.....

There is a very important mid-term election coming on November 2, 2010 that you can participate in, because every American citizen, no matter where he or she lives in the world, can vote in elections held in the USA.  It doesn't matter

how long you have been living outside the USA,
whether you voted recently or not,
whether you're a citizen born outside the country,
or in fact,
whether you have ever voted at all.

Uncle Sam Wants Your Vote!

In order to vote, you must first register and request an absentee ballot, which are both done at the same time with the same form.  That form can be found on either of these websites.

Vote From Abroad
Democrats Abroad
http://www.votefromabroad.org/

Federal Voting Assistance Program
FVAP
http://www.fvap.gov/

These websites have a wizard that will fill out the form for you by asking you questions, leaving you with everything perfectly filled out and simply awaiting your signature.  It takes a whole 10 minutes on the average! Then you print out the form, sign it and address an envelope to the appropriate County Registrar of Voters, whose address the wizard has supplied.

In order to vote you have to give the address that you will vote from whether it's

your home or former home,
a parent or relative's home
the place where you last lived or voted --
even if someone else lives there now

the website wizard knows which county the address is located in.

Once your registrar has your registration/ballot request he or she will mail you your overseas absentee ballot.

The important thing to keep in mind is that time is of the essence. Registration deadlines are usually at the end of September and the mail can be slow at times.

Technical Support:  For any help and all questions please call the FVAP toll free number for Italy 800-784460 and speak with a Voting Assistance Officer in Washington.  Their office hours are 9AM-5PM EST/3PM-11PM Italian time.  Their office supplies all overseas voter info and will connect you directly to your county electoral office.

Your vote will make a difference!  Overseas ballots in Florida decided the presidential election in 2000.

IT IS ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THAT YOU REGISTER AND REREGISTER FOR EACH AND EVERY ELECTION.

Thank you for paying attention and doing your small but huge part.  This election will not just effect America it will effect the whole world, just as the French Election has.

Hello everyone!  I've been living in Foix, near Toulouse, for 2 years, and am so happy to have found this website.  What a great way to exchange!  I have learned so much during my time here, that I'm actually starting to do coaching for expat women!!

What were some of the most important "discoveries" you have made during your time in France, if you don't mind my asking?  Also, what advice do you give people interested in moving here, or who just arrived?  I'm putting together a program, and would love feedback from anyone willing to share!! If any of you are interested, attached is a 20-question survey that would be incredibly helpful and appreciated!

Have a wonderful day, and looking forward to meeting and sharing with you all!AWF%20-%20Questionnaire%202.doc

I am a retired American living in the Gard, near Goudargures to be more precise. I am an artist who dreamed of coming to France since I was much, much younger and was able to make the dream come true. For the most part I've not been disappointed. It seems to me most posts are by people who live either west or south of my area. Would love to hear from anyone in this area. The idea of providing a space for people to express their experiences and feelings is just what expats need so thank you Catherine and James. Obviously I haven't posted a pic so far - but am on FB.

I am VERY curious to know how Americans members we really are on this site. Beyond politics, football and food, do any of you feel a need to express your sentiments on this life we lead daily ? Maybe you're already a member of a similar organization and this need is already fulfilled ? The 16th of February they'll be an on line get together of American's in France  on the SFN chat room open to all. If you're free, come join the fun !

Given the apparent overwhelming success of our first on line " American Happy 3 Hours", we should definitely plan on doing this once a month. Any objections with the monthly nature of this event ? If no objections, looking forward to hear from all of you the 16th of February !

Just an anecdote, having been in the restaurant business in France for many years, I'm very familiar with ambient sound levels created when Americans get together, the electronic silent one created January the 16th was ear shattering and deafening in intensity !!!

Thanks to everyone who participated and listened on, and especially Catharine and James for their support. Any ideas or suggestions, please come forward ! If not, see you next month on February 16th !

Frank
