A good review on the latest version of Ubuntu Linux for those who are perhaps thinking of a change to something faster and more reliable.

PC Advisor review of Ubuntu

If you have an old/older PC that is running Windows poorly or it has become unreliable, then give this a go, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. It's similar to Apple OSX, only it's free.

If you use Windows XP and have the .NET framework installed , you may be hit with this latest update mess-up by Microsoft.

Windows XP update infinite loop

Have a read, and see if you have seen the symtoms.

Thanks. This is all new to me. Malwarebytes solved the problem for me.

I have used AVG antivirus Free edition for  about 10 years and excellent. Don't get fooled into paying for the paid edition, the protection is no better and the extras are unnecessary

Switch to Linux!

If you're stuck with Windows, I can recommend Kaspersky and Malwarebytes (free) and even Microsoft Security Essentials (free).

Have just removed a malware virus called Windows Safe Surfer on my wife's PC which tries to part you from your cash by claiming you have a virus which can be removed by updating your protection, in this case McAfee.

Has anyone recommendations for virus protection?

Barbara, I agree with Brian, turning off passwords is not a good idea, UNLESS, your in the middle of nowhere and the likelihood of someone war driving is very remote.

Most lack of connections are not always down to the WIFI router, but the device trying to attach. It depends on what encryption the attaching device supports, this is important.

As Brian says, we need a little more info on what the router is , and what encryption you are currently using.

I would start with WEP - the least secure and work up from there. Make the password something simple to start, and test as many devices as possible against it.

To be honest these days I connect to WIFI hotspots all over Europe with my iPad , Linux Laptop and smartphone, and it is just a matter of getting the right type of connection.

Cheers

Sheila, there is an open source zip utility called 7zip which offers improved compression ratios and supports a whole range of other compression algorithms. How Winzip think they can charge for something that is free everywhere else is a complete joke.

Have a look and see what you think.
