Sara

Sara went to the rainbow bridge a few weeks ago. She would have been 14 later his year. She added a lot to our lives and we miss her. We still have one of her daughters and two other corgi's but she was our first corgi and a special girl. The attached file is a short writeup about her.

Thanks Liz, to be honest the last time I went to the vets I took a pal with me whose french is fab, but I was so distracted by loui's distress, I didn't take full advantage.  Stupid I know!!  I going to check now your other suggestion.  Many thanks for responding. Pat

I am no expert in dog epilepsy, but know a bit about human epilepsy and for an adult to start fitting there almost always is a causing factor, be it an accident, stroke or something else. I can understand your distress, it must be awuful to see this but I think you do need it investigated as in humans there cqn be a tendancy for the brain to get used to fitting, so the more fits you have the more likely you are to fit again. Given that the dog has had arthritis for a while anyway, could you not try heat pads, condroitin and other remidies for this, so at least he can take his anti convulsants? If you check out what was the totalfrance foru'm, there is a vet living here who goes by vets2you who is english and maybe able to give you some god dog advice on this, otherwise do you hqave a friend who is fluent who can come to the vet with you to help with translation? All the best to both of you xx

Hi, can any one please help?  My husband and I are at our wits end.  You see our gorgeous, eight year old yellow Labrador has started to have seizures.  I've done the normal and trawled the net, frightening my self to death!  Reading about Brain tumors and all the equally horrible stuff!  But what would really help, is communication with some one who has been right where we are now.  We feel so helpless and there is so much we don't under stand.  Following the first seizure we went straight to our vet, who not unexpectedly said don't worry it may be totally random and not happen again.  If only!!  To cut a long story short, the seizures did continue, some more time spaced than others, but all in all not too bad.  Then at the beginning of this month they kicked off in earnest.  Our vet had said originally he would be reluctant to start the anticonvulsant until our boy had started having about 3 seizures a week, for three consecutive weeks.  Well, by last Friday we were at that point, so we all agreed it was time to start the treatment.   I did ask would he do any blood tests first, but he said no point!  I can only assume he meant Loui’s symptoms were so classic Epilepsy, there was no need!  So to start the treatment…………The trouble was during one of the seizures Loui seemed to have really hurt is back left leg, and was limping badly, so the vet checked it and said it needed an Xray.  It turned out to be bad arthritis in his ankles, which, ultimately meant we were unable to start the seizure treatment because the dog needed pain relief at that time, more than he needed the anticonvulsant and apparently he can't have both.  So that's where we are now.  It was just heart breaking to see him suffer another two seizures last evening and other than rub him to reassure him, there was not a single thing we could do!  What I'd really like is to really quiz the vet, but my french just isn't up to it, so as a result we have many questions left unanswered!  I should stress we do really trust our vet, but the language is a real problem.  So we would dearly love to hear from anyone who has lived through seizures/epilepsy with their beloved pooch.  All the emotional ups and downs as well as the practical stuff    Thank you for reading this, I know I’ve rambled on!!

http://www.rawmeatybones.com also has a downlaodable diet guide, which is super.

Barf is a  good site, but of you want a truly balanced diet, you'll find it (in English) on http://www.rawmeatybones.com

They even give the percentages of fruit, or veggies a dog needs, suggests what to feed when etc.

They also advise how to switch from 'commercial' food to raw, which is very important and should not be done too abruptly.

Another advantage of rawmeatybones is that the dog's teeth are cobstabtly cleaned and nothing better than a dog with a 'whiter-than-white' smile, non? :)

Hi Ruth sorry if I wasn't clear

I meant an ALL meat diet without bones,as I said on the bone is better, way too much phosphorus with  just pure meat.

Yes the BARF site is good that's where I got the abbatoir idea, but there is a woeful lack in this country for anyone wanting to feed a balanced raw diet.

Now there's a great idea for a buisness venture!!

Bones, any bones, are no problem just as long as they are not cooked! Even defrosting in the microwave can make them brittle and splinter. I never buy the meat for animals they have in supermarkets, but get it at my local butcher, or (for canard and chicken) at those places where they cut them up and package them for supermarkets: €0.55 kilo ... with the head (berk). Lamb is super and I know many people who give their dogs a whole lamb's head.

B-a-r-f.com is an interesting site (French) with adadresses in your area, rawmeatybones.com isin English and explains a lot of the theory behind this kind of feeding.

Julie, I disagree about the calcium: the bones are quite enough, even for giant breeds like Gladwin.

1 chicken? For a dog who already weighs 65 kilos at 9 months and whose back is higher than the dining room table? €2.20 a meal ... not really that much, is it?

Me too..a whole chicken my God!
