Hi all,
My neighbour urgently needs a home for her 4 years old blue point Siamese cat.
He is used to a garden and cat flap.
Neutered male, tattoo, micro-chipped, all vaccinations up to date and Pet Passport. He was due to go to U.K. but prospective new owner backed out for personal reasons.
Thanks for any help.
Comment by Janet Langman on April 1, 2012 at 8:44 not RHS or I would be selling!! I am in UK at the moment and cant remember the name - will email you when I get back on Thursday. What can you trade?
Ooh, ooh, as in the full RHS encyclopaedia that I have never been able to afford?
Comment by Janet Langman on March 31, 2012 at 9:40 Hello I would like to trade a full encyclopedia of Gardening - 12 volumes - everything you ever wanted to know about any type of plant and lots about gardening. Dates from mid 80's - if you live a long way away, we can meet half way. Otherwise, come to Salies for the weekend - you will love it and go away with a treasure. I want to trade for something better. Make me an offer. Something smaller, ideally. Send me a message and we can talk.

Due to a disability I can no longer garden and I have 2 compost bins to give away. I' d appreciate some help in return, for about half an hour, just to move the compost from one of the bins across to my cold frame. One bin (the full one) is 300litre green hexagonal bin with rods holding it together and a hinged lid. The other is a 90litre black plastic cone shape with a lid and a sliding door at the bottom. I'm in the vienne, 86, Valdivienne 86300
In 2011 tattooing was supposed to be outlawed in favour of microchipping, but you are right in that an 'identification' of some sort is necessary. Microchipping is internationally recognised and can be done without anaesthesia. If you are having the dog/cat neutered then you can opt for tattooing which is marginally cheaper, but if the dog travels to other countries, it will still need a microchip, so you can argue that in this instance, you are wasting your money having the tattoo done.
Personally, I feel that a microchip is more reliable too, as after a while tatoo can become illegible and on animals with black skin, impossible to read at the best of times. They also rely upon the skill of the vet to use the tatooing equipment, often they are very difficult to read.
French law states that dogs and cats that change hands, either given or sold, need to be identified beforehand. From tomorrow, ALL dogs and cats need to have an ID. It is one thing that the UK authorities envy about the french system.
Lots of information is available if you google soemthing like "Loi d'identification chats et chiens"
Comment by Johnny Summerton on December 31, 2011 at 10:50 Lynn, just a question about microchipping. Is it really illegal to give away an animal which hasn't been microchipped? My understanding is that it's identification that's required and that can be either through tatouage or chipping. If the animal is going to be travelling then it needs a chip, but as long as it stays in France a tattoo will do. I've taken two kittens and a dog from the SPA this past summer. All of them had been tattooed, none chipped.
Comment by Caroline Aronson-van Berkel on December 31, 2011 at 9:50 Hi Lynn,
Thanks for info.I did not know this as it is our first dog here in France.
Caroline
Hi Caroline,
Please don't think I am being a kill-joy and I truly hope that you find good homes for the puppies,, but it is illegal to 'give away' a dog, cat or ferret in fact without it being microchipped. There are hefty fines and the french authorities are becoming more and more vigilant.
It is also in the best interests of the dog, as there is a lot of trafficking etc
With cats, we always recommend that you ask for the vet's microchip fee to be re-imbused by the new owners, which also makes them think more responsibly about their new family member, it also means that you've done your best too!
Very best wishes
Lynn
