Decision made - I won't get the haflingers. Did a lot of thinking, took in all your great advice (and I know that you are ALL much more experienced than myself) and had a serious chat to my OH. I was unsure, but had read on an English site that 12 is still young enough to break in. I'm so glad you all brought sense into my head. Thank you !!!

HI Siobhan,

I found the horses on leboncoin, the name is Canalda Nicolas, I think.

Do you know the name of the people selling them as I know alot of horse owners in that area.??

I think you need to look for a pony or cob who has been there and got the T shirt, don't be put off by it being a bit older, why not try a good equestrian centre? They often have nice horses who know their job, you may pay a little more but it could be worth it!

Thank you very much for your comments. In fact, I had thought about all this before (too old to be broken in, and horses that are too used to each other to want to ride on their own), and a friend who has had years of experience had told me the same. What we REALLY want is one (or preferable two) small horses or big ponies, easy going, to have some relaxing hacks. I don't know why I'm so fixed on haflingers. But I'm certainly rethinking, if I really want to undertake a 5 hour journey (and drag my daughter), if I'm not convinced it'll be worth it.

I couldn't agree more with Therese and Sandy, a 12 year old unbroken haflinger is a big ask for someone with lots of experience, I have started several older horses and they have all had 'issues'.  Do be very wary of separation anxiety, natives of any breed seem to suffer this more than other horses and it can be very difficult to overcome.  Good luck.

Thank you Therese and Sandy. We'll have a good look and were also offered to try to ride the one of them. They were asking 2500 for both, but would go down to 1700. Wormed, vaccinated etc

I absolutely 100% agree with Sandy. An unbroken horse of any age is a big project and you really need to know what you are doing, so a 12-year old is probably pushing it a bit for someone of limited experience. I'm sure she is absolutely adorable as long as you only ask her to do what she is already used to, but take her outside of her comfort zone and you might well see another side to her.

Just out of curiosity, how much are they asking for them?

Hi Kathrin.....Depends what you want to do...but I would be very wary about taking on an unbroked 12 year old if you would want to ride her.....especially if you haven't had any experience ...On the other hand if you are happy to have her as a companion to the other mare and just enjoy handling her then why not!

Just one word of caution...if these two have been kept together for some time then you may find that they won't like being seperated when one is being ridden...so please when you go to see them...ask lots of questions and ask to see the one which can be...ridden ...and ridden away from the other...You have had a bad experience and you need to be able to enjoy and get on well with your new pony...let us know how it goes on Saturday!!...Good luck...Sandy
