A plea!

SFN is NOT a forum (thankfully!), but this does mean that the discussion threads can be hard to find. With this group, I'd like to create an easy to navigate resource, so please, please, please, try and post in the appropriate thread. If there isn't one, and / or you think something else should be added, just leave me a comment on the wall and I will address it. Thank you all! Catharine x

Due to a disability I can no longer garden and I have 2 compost bins to give away. I' d appreciate some help in return, for about half an hour, when coming to collect them/it;  just to move the compost from one of the bins across to my cold frame. One bin (the full one) is 300litre green hexagonal bin with rods holding it together and a hinged lid. The other is a 90litre black plastic cone shape with a lid and a sliding door at the bottom. They both make good results and are easy to use.

It would be really good to see them being used again and to get a job done towards tidying my abandoned plot.

I'm in the vienne, 86, Valdivienne 86300

Cou-cou, a rather splendid cou-nou cock is looking for a new home where he can strut his stuff, rather than go straight into a coq au vin. Under a year old, he is handled by my children and is good with the hens.

Snuck in with a load of pullets and surplus to requirements.

Jonzac area or can bring to Bordeaux.

merci b Jane... great advice for the right words AND pronunciation... i don't think we'll get a boy - but as we still have our little cottage in west sussex i can see some interesting naming sessions ahead of us... i'll let you know how we get on

You ask for Soosex blanc, french pronunciation for Sussex. Also if they are d'un vol libre de la salmonelle. Our Gamme Vert has deliveries every fortnight on a Tuesday and you have to order in advance.
They are very good layers and also are good for the table, if necessary. We called our cockerel Lewes!

thanks Jane... erm, any idea how i ask in french for light sussex, salmonella free flock??! (don't mind about the breed once they're trusted layers, but salmonella free seems a good thing to do)

We bought our hens, light Sussex, from our local Gamme Vert. They came from a salmonella free flock.

If you don't have any joy at the market, you can often order them from your local Gamme Vert. They usually have a range of ages i.e chicks, teenagers and ready to lay and weekly deliveries. There are often small ads for chooks etc. in the Gamme Vert / feed merchant places too. Happy chicken hunting!

right, chicken house is designed and husband is building it... i have a couple of 'beginner chicken keeper' type books... and made a foray to the local market at the weekend to ask about chickens... and failed miserably. I'm not asking for the right thing perhaps? I think i want to buy 4 pullets at point of lay, or in any case girls that are about 5 months old? I'm not fussy about the breed... Obv. i'm buying 'blind', but haven't seen a 'chicken' shop locally! advice please
