Sadly, that is the way it is. The prof is not atypical of behaviour I have seen as well. The question of drug addiction is debatable because actual physical withdrawal is short short but a habit with addiction-like behaviouralism is what a few…

I am a bit bamboozled by the European smoker concept. Go to China and you'll find it almost impolite not to smoke. Certain other Asian countries are similar. On the other hand I know very few smokers in either Kampuchea or Viet Nam, so it is…

Warning

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 8:29am 28 Comments

Watch out people! This morning I found two messages from the 'Foreign and Commonwealth Office' (FCO) asking me to update information on the 'Locate' files. I have never registered with them, so thought quickly, having worked abraod a lot I am used to FCO bulletins and registrations, so looked closer. The http is in the wrong order and format, so I am guessing that it is a spam that looks convincing until we are in. I have e-mailed the FCO informing them and asking advice and will put up a…

babylon

I would like to make people aware of the Babylon Search engine becoming invasive and catching on to things like the free video download that shows here in SFN. Babylon is spyware, end of story. It slows down e-mail, inhibits online activities like Facebook and Twitter, etc and has no respect for whether people want it or not. I am sure James will say how to get rid of it, I know for Firefox after having two unintended downloads of that nasty recently. So be vigilant everybody!

Asbestos

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 10:47am 8 Comments

Just heard something about the regulations on asbestos (amiante) having changed. We have one roof that we cannot afford to replace yet that is probably affected. This may affect quite a lot of people whether they realise it or not with all the Eternit used for barns, garages, etc. Anybody know what this is about. Have searched around but found nothing on the sites where we would expect it to be.

What on Earth is going on on SFN?

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 9:30am 99 Comments

I believe, but stand corrected if I am wrong, that Catharine and James named this site SURVIVE France Network somewhat tongue in cheek. I believe we would all hope that nobody literally needs to survive this country. However, it strikes me that it is suffering the malaise other sites suffer.

There are various groups of people using SFN. Firstly there are those who like to engage by exchanging views and occasionally debating. On the latter point it seems to be a natural human ‘sport’.…

Dear Brian

Welcome to the network - we hope you find it useful!

If you haven't already done so, don't forget to upload a photograph of yourself so NOT your cat or your company logo (!), to your profile (use the setting button on the right hand side of your page) and once you've completed your profile information, you will be able to see your location on the 'Members Map'. This feature is a great way to find other people in your area so do make sure you add your location - that way other people will be able to find you too! And do add as much information to your profile as possible. Again, that way SFN members searching for people with similar interests, hobbies and occupations will be able to connect with each other.

Feel free to join any groups that look interesting or suggest your own. The groups can all be found in the social tab at the top of the page. If you're a blogger you can also add your blog posts to SFN - we love reading them!

You can list items for sale in the Bring Buy and Sell group and add any events to the Events page. And come and say 'Hi' in the chat window - we're all very friendly!

Best wishes
Catharine and James
