Last night I got an email from Free, asking me to update my new bank card details. I have just received three new credit and bank cards, so it seemed palusible. But having done it, I noticed that the website was not Free, and that the email did not address me personally so I immediately called my bank to cancel the card.Good thing too as it was a fraud. Helping to house and support refugees

Posted on October 26, 2015 at 17:35 35 Comments

I would like to offer my rental cottage to a small family for the winter. There is only 1 bedroom and I am in rural southwest France which may not be suitable for people needing to find work. I believe that they would get a government stipend to cover utilities. I have contacted one association but not heard back. Any ideas out there of how to help the refugees?

I think that I messed up my French driving test...can anyone reassure me?

Found out by chance recently that I was supposed to get a French driving license when I was issued a carte de sejour in about 1994. I was only spending a few months in France at the time, but now live here on a pretty permanent basis.

Had my driving test this morning and was told at the start that I had to drive like a "jeune conducteur", but I now realise that I was driving at 90kph on departmental roads instead of 80. Have I flubbed my exam, or will the inspector take into…

What do you do about paying house guests who want to leave?

Posted on June 30, 2012 at 10:01 37 Comments

I have had three sets of unhappy houseguests in twelve years who demanded refunds. In each case they had booked for two weeks. They were also all Australian who perhaps are not used to old buildings, though some of my most wonderful guests have also been from Australia. The first time I was so astonished I refunded them. The second pair suffered from allergies so I refunded them too but clarified my website and now turn away susceptible clients. Then two weeks ago I got another couple who… Continue

Weed killer rules

I am surrounded by a particularly nasty neighbour with whom I have had lots of problems in the past. He shot and blinded my cat in one eye, resulting in a 250 euro vet bill. Our bicycle shop man said "someone" must have sawed the handlebars of my friends bike because they started bending as he was racing down a steep hill and he almost lost control of the bike. We have tried to ignore his odious activity because we knew it would just get worse if I reacted. For the last few years he has…
