Why is the word of a 'working class' person less than that of a 'middle or upper class' person?

I pose this question as my wife has just received her anual letter from her private pension company asking for the signature of a 'Professional person' (teacher, JP, MP, doctor, solicitor etc) to verify that she is still alive & well.

This could be seen as 'class discrimination', why does the word of a middle class professional mean more than the word of anybody else?

The word of a disgraced peer, such as Lord Archer would be accepted over mine, this makes the argument all…
