As the title says we have a journey to make, for the Xmas week. At just over 1000km, we'd like to break the journey half way, but where? Looking for a town not too far from the motorway and with some historical or other interest. Our dog will be with us. I can do the hotel research but need some help with a location. Many thanks

I presume you're going through Burgundy ; the easiest route for you would take you through Basle, and if you're keeping to the motorways, that means Mulhouse. I would say your best stopoff would be around Auxerre, with Vézelay and Avallon not far off. Quite a lot of interest in those places, easy to google them up.
