Continuing on its route northwards, the next stop for the 2013 Tour de Finance is further up the Atlantic coast and a way inland in the town of Niort.

The event starts with a coffee and ‘welcome’ session at 9.30 and then the morning’s seminars will start. The short sessions will tackle a variety of subjects, all of which can prove problematic for expats living in France. The planned topics include tax, pensions and currency transfers, property letting and holiday rentals and of course, healthcare and financial advice.

There will be plenty of opportunity to chat to the guest speaker over the free buffet lunch kindly provided by the organisers. You could also use this time to ask any specific questions that might not have been covered during the morning. Obviously, it’s also a great opportunity to meet other expats living in and around the region.

And last but not least, when you book your place, you will be automatically entered into a prize draw. There are vouchers worth £250 to be won - (thank you British Corner Shop!) - mmm, that’s a lot of Marmite...

The event will end around 2.30, leaving you enough time to explore the town. Niort is best known as the centre of the French insurance industry but you’ll be happy to know that there is more to it than that! The area is noted for the Marais Potevin - a vast area of wetland that is also know as the French ‘green venice’ but if you don’t have time to explore the marais, Niort itself contains plenty of historic monuments to see.

One of my favourites is the ‘donjon’ or keep which dates from the late 12th century and is an almost perfect example of a true fortress. It looks especially spectacular when it is lit up at night. I also love the market - Les Halles. Built in 1869, this is something completely different but equally stunning and well worth a visit. Niort really is a nice place to explore. Numerous changes have taken place in the town centre since 2010 with an overall emphasis on making the town ‘greener’ and more pedestrian friendly.

But don’t just take my word for it, come along to the Tour de Finance event and see for yourself!

The event is open to all, entirely free of charge and is a wonderful opportunity to get free expert advice on a wide range of subjects Places are limited but SFN readers can pre-book using one of the links below. Niort is worth a visit(it's a fairly big "town")...and if you wish to stay a bit longer...la Vendée(oh dear!)..and les Sables d'Olonne and the coast...are nearby. I'll try to make it, being a bit of a long lost "ex pat", but I reckon that the sound of(intelligent?!) English voices would be worth the "déplacement de la Vendée" Bon vent !
