Finger waving cashier in Carrefour

Sorry * posts*!

* Points potentially inflammatory question and then ducks for cover*

Why is driving a RHD vehicle an * infringement of security rules for themselves* etc. etc. Alexander? I do and am aware of the possible vision limitations and thus drive accordingly. I also drive a large vehicle with excellent visibility.

How does that make me any less safe than some one in a LHD who is driving up my arse and hell bent on overtaking on the brow of a hill?

Just sayin....

This has got a bit fiery!!

Regarding having to show your bags at the checkout, they obviously have a real problem with shoplifters. It tickled me when we were visited by some Australian friends, they pointed out that in Oz, shoplifting is affectionately known as 'French Shopping'!

Chris, you could say that you haven't got a "clue". Sorry, we Manx eh!! All this talk of the English!!

Thanks Catherine!

Well in Cluses they'll normally let you through the Carte Pass aisle if you are paying by CB - though I'm normally too shy to try this, my wife has no such qualms

Ooooh, get 'er, copy cat, copy cat, nja, nja!

I’ll post a photo as soon as I have one of myself in bed with my eyes closed.

Oh, for heaven's sake. Service in France IS generally awful - no argument. Why bicker?

Interested to know your nationality, or origin, Mike. You seem to have a downer on the "English", or do you mean those of British origin or English speakers in general.

How extraordinary! I just got back from the supermarket and find this thread filling my inbox. However, not only is there a 'hide behind black boxes' syndrome noticeable, but those who moan about people moaning appear to moan most of all!

It occurs to me, Mike Butler, that YOU are doing the most moaning here, about the rest of us.

I am pleased that your life in France (if, indeed, you live here) is so perfect and that you are so totally enmeshed with the thoughts and activities of the ethnic population. You'll be wanting us to apologise for being British, next.

And do replace your black square with a photo, please.

Sorry Catherine - must persuade a willing child to take a photo of me!

Had the temerity to ask for and receive an empty box from a shelf stacker in Leclerc PĂ©rigueux the other day. She will probably have received a verbal or written warning for her pains as the supervisor at the automatic tills was insistent that I tell her who gave me the box, which rayon etc etc. I suggested that she could keep her box and should have suggested that she keep the contents. I suggested also that customers get irritated that they are always viewed as potential thieves. This issue always arises when I go in to spend a lot of money on one single item (a phone, bottle of spirits etc) where I don't need a trolley. I told them that in the UK they would lose their customer base if everyone were treated in this manner.

(I was told that boxes are available round the back of the store (nicely flattened) and that boxes for groceries were available to buy along with carrier bags).

James, I hardly think that you were turned away from THE point of sale, rather A point of sale.

I suppose, in a similar way to attempting to use an express cash-only till with more than ten items and/or a credit/debit card.

However, I don't think much of some French check-out operators, either - I find some of them rude, ignorant and lazy.

Mike, Because we come to live here because we're pissed off with the shenanigans in our own country, doesn't necessarily mean we have to mutely put up with similar bad service or attitude here without complaint.

Never ceases to amaze me that the vast majority of “if you don’t like it go home” comments come from “black squares”

This was simply an observation of service received and not a comparison with any other country Alexander.

The question I asked was 'If you ran a business would you tell your staff to turn customers away from the point of sale for not carrying the right card?'

I like the fact that the cashiers are abrupt......in the US and UK the people on the till get abuse all day long for very little reward. In France retail workers are well within their rights to remind customers that they are there to provide service not be enslaved.

Maybe write it off to live and learn.......when in Rome do as the Romans do.

I had a nasty experience with a supervisor in Casino. Once a month they have 4 for 2 offers - very good if the products included in the offers are what you want. Before going I marked the items in the catalogue. In the store I found an item of Jambon de Montagne (3 barquettes in one pack) - in the catalogue marked at €4,60 a barquette - however on the shelf there was a large clear ticket showing exactly the same product, but now clearly labelled at the 4 for 2 offer at €4,40 per pack. Normally with the store card for these offers, two items are immediately reimbursed - but not so this time all four packs went through at €4,40. I queried it with the cashier showing her the ticket from the shelf, so she called the supervisor. She insisted the item had to be as per the catalogue (which is an advert, surely), and not as shown on the shelf. She jabbed her finger at the item in the catalogue, so I pointed out the prices were different, but she started shouting at me, so I shouted back and demanded a reimbursement. Very reluctantly she gave me a credit note!

I would have been tempted to wave back, leave the cart and walk out.

I did this once in Walmart before I stopped shopping there altogether.

My OH and I had a Leclerc manager more or less up against the wall when he more or less refused to listen to a complaint. We got his name and wrote to the company HQ, plus repeated our complaint to them, that letter was acknowledged but a couple of years on we have never heard anything conclusive. The store has not changed.
