The Mayor

Just reading John West's latest blog post, and the references to the lady mayor of the village intrigue me. I believe it should be said Madame le Maire not Madame La Maire. My question is WHY??

Is the title a masculine position? One of the quirks of the French language... anyone got a simple explanation?

Miles

Ahhh so it is the title or position. That makes sense!

The masculine/feminine applies to the adjective and not the person… Silly eh? C’est la vie!

I can't tell you why Miles, no more than I couuld tell you why any word is masculine or feminine,

but as far as I know you are right. It shouldbe Mme Le Maire as the word maire is masculine.
