Ours is not to reason why.
I’m much less stressed since I gave up expecting things to be logical in France.
Although possibly there is some arcane logic at work here that will be clear only to the Fisc. And maybe George (!)
It makes no sense whatsoever to me! I personally would ignore any appendix/schedule requirement to report the UK pension net - it should be reported gross, just as helenochka sets out above.
Reporting foreign pensions net for ‘taux effectif’ purposes is more commonly intended for pensions from a large number of countries, that do not include the UK.
Well it would be very useful if this was indicated somewhere within the formulaire. No idea why I got one. Ignoring it. I have done tax returns in a few countries round the world but the French one , at least the paper one , is way up there in its lack of clarity. And my French is pretty good. No wonder my husband used to dread it landing in the post box. Thanks for the input
I wonder if that is what I have just come up against.
100% certain they know I am a widower as they have written it down in black and white and also sent me a separate paper saying as @JaneJones pointed out, that I have to make 2 declarations. One from January the first 2024 to June the 2nd 2024 for both of us, and the other for me alone from June the 2nd 2024 'till the end of that year.
So I made a start this morning and the first thing I see, after all the preliminaries, is the amount they have pre-entered for my French earnings, but for the whole year. ![]()
I ticked the thing to make a correction and it went mad, red letters and how can I justify such a large reduction etc.
From all that was said before that point it was obvious that I was declaring for half the year, how come they don’t know that?
I’ll try again tomorrow, or the next day. ![]()
Well that fills me with confidence! I have nothing like that on my 2 paper declaration forms. I was told at regional office in Nov to file on paper but my local office tells me I can do it on paper or online….my choice. I need 2 copies of 3916 and 2 of 2047 Going to see them again Friday. If I can’t make paper deadline I will have a go online hoping nothing is pre-filled Would be grateful to know how you get on David
I’ll let you know, I did wonder why they sent me 2 copies of 2042K though. Whatever that is, never had one before.
As regards paper or online, one explanetary document said quite firmly that I must do it online if I did it online last year.
In fact, just checked, and I have 2 x 2042K, 1 x 2042CK, a 2041 FDC and to round it all off, a 32 page explanatory document 2041 NK. ![]()
Looks like I’ve got a bit of reading to do, what is the deadline for department 24? ![]()
28th of May, only 4 weeks and 31 more pages to go. ![]()
Just read on a bit, declaring by paper must be in by the 20th. ![]()
Gosh you got more than me. I have 2x2042 K, and 1x2042 CK and that’s it apart from reams of explanatory stuff. I can’ot see the relevance of the 2042 CK complémentaire They ask for foreign pension revenue AFTER deduction of tax paid! Seems to be a lot of duplication with the 2042 K. Hope I get some explanation Friday
On last page of online declaration.do I have to reenter what I have already filled out. It’s the resume bit at the end. I don’t understand how to do this part. Help
Has it not carried forward certain figures automatically? eg from form 2047?
Wasn’t there a box to tick early on in the process, to activate “reports” (ie so that where appropriate figures are carried forward to the main tax form)?
I’m afraid my memory is a bit hazy because I found the whole process so horrible I’ve blanked it out.
Will go back and check. I’m sure I’m making a mess of it but having a go. Can rectify in autumn as I had to do with husbands last one which was v v wrong! Probably why I’m so nervous this time Thanks
No fellow Brits nearby who also have to report UK income, that you could ask to cast an eye over it?
No. Those I know have never bothered declaring!! All will be well eventually I expect. Thanks
Hi David
Have done everything on paper….reams of it. Have you completed your complémentaire 2042. I have no idea what to do with it.
No, not had a 2nd go at it yet, still wondering what to do when I get to my pre inserted French pensions. Force a correction to almost half, or allow the whole year entry to stand and leave it blank for the 2nd half. ![]()
Maybe today. ![]()
I will have to check, maybe the UK pensions are added to the French ones in that box 1AS, to make one big lump, in which case the correction reduction will not look so extreme. ![]()
Hi David,
That would be tempting for you because you’d benefit from the two parts though I think it would be incorrect!
That wouldn’t be right either, UK pensions in box 1AM (if they are france taxable - includes state pension) or 1AL (if they are entitled to a tax credit - government and local authority pensions).
Don’t you have to fill in the UK pensions on the 2047, box 1, line 12 - if you go into paying tax on that pension income, it might set up a prelevement which will be taken from your bank account so may be necessary to distinguish the UK income (which the impot can’t ‘prelevement’ directly) from the France income (which they can).
Though perhaps they will adjust the France income prelevement to take into account the UK pension (all this of course only if there’s now tax to pay). That would presumably also be the effect of adding up all the pension income, UK and France, and just entering it all in box 1AS. (Again assuming no UK government pension income).
But the Impot already know the amount of France pension income - so my guess is over declaring the amount would just flag an error?
Firstly, if it is optional, I don’t allow prelevements so forget that. Also forget it for all previous years because we have never earned enough to pay any tax before.
Although I always do my declarations online, they have sent me 2 forms this year, one for us both before Fran died, and one for me alone for the rest of the year. But neither of them are 2047, both are 2042K, I have also received a form entitled ‘Declaration Complementaire’ which is a 2042 K.
No idea why they have sent them while telling me it is obligatory for me to pay online. Unless they are being kind (
) in giving me them to practise on. but if so why not give me a 2047? Just remembered the 2041 FDC that I also have which I believe may be to help me add everything up. I have no need of that, I know exactly how much we both received over the year but just can’t work out how to tell them. Sadism simply does not adequately describe these people. ![]()
Yet another No. 2041NK ![]()
I was going to have another shot at it today but all the various bank statements came in at the same time, and I always check off those carefully before doing anything else.
As if that wasn’t enough, quite without any communication as to why, the UK taxman has sent me, referencing my NI number, one large payment of over £1,000 and another a week or so later for just under £1,000.
Now I am not complaining about being given around £2,000, but it would be nice to know why if for nothing else so that I can explain it to the French taxman this time next year. I assumed that the first payment was something to do with Fran’s death, they had said at the time that my pension might be enhanced, but why 2 payments, and why so much?
I may do it tomorrow now and forge ahead and then maybe they’ll tell me what I have done wrong.
Your payments from HMRC are probably because your late wife paid too much tax and you have received a rebate as I did. Also your second payment may be a backdated enhanced payment of uk state pension. However I received letters explaining this to me. You will probably get explanation eventually. My letters arrived after money had been paid in.
Thank you @Meggie , you might be right about the late arriving explanatory letters but most certainly she did not pay too much tax, neither of us have paid a penny in income tax in either country for 25 years, apart from 2 months a couple of years ago when UK tax was taken from my pension providor twice in 2 months. They eventually paid that back to us though.
Not confident of any answers but I will make an effort to find a number to ring in England tomorrow.
Main thing though is sorting out this horrendous French situation.
Bear in mind tomorrow (Monday 5th May) is a UK Bank Holiday because of the VE Day commemorations. ![]()
Good point, they always go for the Monday rather than the date there don’t they. ![]()
