So
,Cagouille comes from either the Latin cinchyllium for shell or the Angoumois for spiral. The escargot more likely from Spanish caracol for snail via old Occitan word cagolha .

A rarely used word now firca spiral staircase was ‘caracol’. Maybe we should bring it back!
