Really sorry to hear that @toryroo must be very frustrating when you have got everything organised.
My passport has also nearly expired so a good job I wasn’t going anywhere. At the moment I am still in the throes of working out how to get an acceptable photo. Went through the procedure online and then clicked on the button for help. Recieved an acknowledgement very quickly with some advice entirely unconnected with the problem and am now waiting for the promised detailed reply but I’m sure the 72 hours has been and gone.
When you get around to renewing please let me know where you got the picture done.

Hopefully your change of plans will make that far less stressful and you’ll probably give the kids better feedback if you’ve got more time.

I know there’s nothing I can say @toryroo other than so many sorries to hear that, you might have been beating yourself up over the mistake / oversight - take consolation that it’s a team effort, and I’m sure everyone will now be checking everyone’s travel documents for the next trip. Glad to see you are getting into new year plans!

Getting UK passport photo is not difficult - I couldn’t be bothered with’faffing’ around trying to DIY. Went to local Photo Studio - proper studio. They took photo, got it approved, and I was able to sign digitally for the passport application as well. Yes, it cost about 12 euros - but worth paying simply for peace of mind - they know all the different passport requirements for many countries, (can also take photos for driving licence etc), know the techie stuff - and get it right first time !!

But it does sound as if you are making lemonade out of lemons and will make the best of it!

I am assuming that this is in the UK is it? If so, totally different. If I am wrong and you went to a French one, please tell me which and where as I have been told that they are unable to give acceptable codes.

No but I think @Concorde, and certainly me, was talking about French versions of @ChrisMann , not booths.
A terrifying thought, if such a thing exists…
I had my Fr passport photos done by a photographer in town in order to avoid the old ‘head ends just above eyebrows’ look which I don’t much like - I still look like a hideous psycho but hey ho.

I had a serious disaster with passports. Wife, me and three granddaughters had a week at Roses, Cataluña. We were due to fly back from Perpignan. Arrived at the airport, dropped off the rental car, no passports. They definitely said we couldn’t fly. We had left them at the campsite in Roses. We went back, checked flights for miles around - Girona, Béziers, Carcassonne, even Toulouse and, because it was the end of August there were only a few at around the £200 per person. So, ruling out that due to cost (hotel rooms as well), I decided on a one way hire to Calais, and a ferry back. It was exhausting and very costly. Now, passports get checked ad nauseam.

It was in France - for an Irish passport; but the same applies to a UK passport - went to studio.
If you’re applying to ‘renew’ UK passport then I don’t think there is any need for a code; once the photo is downloaded into your computer the ‘system’ will pick it up if you go through the techie steps.
As I understand it there is a problem in using french photo-booths and using the number - it’s not recognised in the UK, but the french photo- studios ‘know’ how to get round this problem. You can have digi photo taken by them, sent to you by e-mail, then it’s in your computer ready to be downloaded with the UK on-line application form.
This was in the Villereal/Villeneuve dept 47 - but ‘any’ good photo studio can do this for you. Been there, done that - voice of experience here !!

Thank you for such an encouraging reply, 47 isn’t far from me if I get stuck although I travel very little distances these days but I definitely think the next step is a search for a local professional.
BTW is there a lost looking little mouse down your way? When I bought my first humane trap I put him in the car intending to release in a few kms. Forgot all about him 'till I was passing Villeneuve sur Lot, so that is where he was delivered. 
Quite a few around you (?Nontron?) I think, according to Google - though it may be that most don’t do passport photos, ,but you can ask.
I won’t be back in France until probably June unfortunately.
