There are many laws in France, and in my experience people do decide which laws to flout if they think they can get away with it. Some laws are weakly or not at all enforced locally. If you try to hit your head against such practices then you will not get very far. There is also here a sort of local way of doing things which doesn’t accord with the law, such as my earlier comment of rogue hunters from the city being kept in check by rolling their cars into a ditch.
I find this kind of ignorant response absolutely unbelievable. It’s a personal attack on me for holding views shared by many French people about hunting. At the last count as few as 20% were in favour of hunting. So far from being an outlier, my views are in line with those of the country I have chosen to live in.
And if you want to see comments about drunken hunters, just scroll back.
Where are you getting this number from?
Read my comment above yours. I think it must be a lot more than 20% in the rural communes where most responsible hunting occurs. Here it’s pretty universal acceptance, but out chasse are very responsible. It may be 20% in the cities, but that’s not surprising. If you try to go against the local chasse then you’re in for a hard time and life’s too short. John’s comments are not a personal insult to you, he is just very forthright. With pretty much everyone. So, don’t take it personally.
We were talking about hunting this afternoon.
We are surrounded by forest - like many small towns in France - and these are full of animals. Roads pass through these forests and not infrequently there are collisions, often fatal for the driver and even more often for the beast, between animals and cars. Even without that, deer, boar, hares etc do a lot of damage. Wherther I like it or not (and I prefer to eat the meat of an animal which has lived in freedom for all its life, before being shot, to that of one raised indoors.
IPSOS poll.
IPSOS. 80% of people are in favour of a ban on Sundays.
In fact, according to the most recent poll, for the first time ever the majority of people in rural areas as well as urban areas are against hunting.
The latest poll shows 51% are against hunting in what are called ‘rural towns’ or ‘rural areas’. I followed the link to the detailed results, which should give the questions used, definitions and methodology, but this just goes to the One Voice home page and I couldn’t find it on their website. If anyone has the document, I’d be interesting in looking at it.
The IPSOS poll was based on the views of only 1000 people out of a population of 68 million.
Edit…and it was sponsored by One Voice an animal rights organisation
Thanks. I’ll read it later as I have people coming for dinner. A quick skim though seems to suggest that no hunters were asked, as the question ‘are you a hunter’ got no positive replies.
Interesting article.
What did surprise me was the majority acceptance of trophy hunting that included bringing in 'trophies from overseas (which are increasingly the product of so-called ‘canned hunting’ particularly in sub-Saharan Africa). Shooting sanglier and deer is very different to African trophy hunting. I assume the French public’s relaxed attitude towards the reflects a general ignorance of this practice,
Massive contrast to majority attitudes to local hunting in Southern Africa
And I bet they didn’t ask one person from the countryside.
Or any non-vegans.
“*1000 people, comprising a national representative sample of the French population aged from 18 to 75 years old. The group was asked via the Internet using Ipsos’ Access Panel Online (quota method: sex, age, profession of the person being questioned, urban area category, region).”
Anyone here use the Ipsos’ Access Panel?
It would therefore appear that they did not ask a representative portion of the population.
I’m not sure how one would go about that sort of survey in any meaningful way.
I would never trust any YouGov survey not to be rigged in the way it’s run and constructed. I used to be on YouGov panel but after a long period of doing their surveys and others got totally fed up with the obvious bias of a high proportion of theirs in particular (though they are not the only ones). IPSOS were nothing like as bad.
It was so transparent you could pretty much work out who had paid them for fhe survey and what survey result was wanted.
The second time I commented I was de-panelled.
Wot, something Zahawi had an interest in wasn’t above board? ![]()
