The socks are popular on long haul flights to try and prevent deep vein thrombosis. I use gin and tonic instead as a precautionary measure.

Yes, they do, Angela. Three brown forms went off yesterday. The thing is, every RV at med trait results in 2 more. I now have pending … blood x 2, cardio, dermatology, X-ray, tetanus jab - I wish it was a shot of AZ. It’ll be the trick cyclist next. But, apart from the pneumatic sox, no actual treatment.

I printed off a sheaf of them, John S. I knew they’d come in handy.

I’m with you on that one. Mind you, I need said medication to calm me down, being batted about an ever increasing list of the medical depts of St Lo hospital but, as I say, without being given any actual treatment yet.

I did get a scrip for the sox - 2 prs. And I believe there was a reduction. I’m not sure how much because I don’t know if the price was per sock, like spectacle lenses [] or per pair. If per pair, 50%. At 33€/pr, I would hope so.

Long haul flights! I’d completely forgotten that exist :no_mouth:

But Cap’t E it looks like you are experiencing the diagnostic terrier that is the French Health Service…! I do love the NHS, but have been impressed by the determination of all the docs here to dig and dig until they are sure. No matter how many tests it takes…not for them the “take an aspirin and come back in three weeks if it’s got worse”. The down side is huge over-medication, so do question what you are offered.

Reminds me of a pal who “pulled a muscle” playing rugby a couple of years ago. He popped into his MT for some Volterol type stuff and ended up having an operation to reattach a ligament.

That would be fine by me, Jane but I get the distinct impression that my med trait is more inclinded to pass the buck. ‘Urgences’ at St Lo were well hacked off when I appeared. He’d used the English words ‘emergency’ and ‘immediately’ …

Fortunately they had no patients, so I got a quick once-over and an RV to see the specialist I should have been sent to in the first place. ‘Urgences’ wanted a word on that score with my med trait but he’d gone AWOL.

They made the point when a man was wheeled in on a stretcher “Make way, please. This one is a real emergency - possibly a stroke”

When I pointed out to med trait that the time I had this problem before, changing my b.p. scrip solved the problem. I even had the scrip to hand but he ignored it.

I’ve seen him 3 times now. Not a word about vaccination for Cov but an RV for tetanus.

Not impressed.

change your MT. It’s a simple process (if you can find another one )

Ahhh…well in MT’s defence he was probably taking precautionary approach as he doesn’t know you…which if it had been needed you would have appreciated!

We do like to reminisce. When we needed flight socks we had an appointment at the Pharmacy in Mouzon (Ardenne) for fitting and we were able to pick them up shortly afterwards. At the time I had a decent mutuelle and the socks did not cost us anything. And the pharmacy was across the road from our house.

I intend to Graham. The thing is, I don’t know yet where I’ll end up. I’m in rented digs 20 mins S.E. of St Lo until a have readies in my sticky mitts from sale of flat in VLC, ES. This is week 2 of it being on sale. Esperamos mejor.

Possibly. He qualified last year. But what I think I have omitted to mention is his manner. The surly end of off-hand.

His entry in Doctolib includes English spoken - and he can, perfectly well, but he talks to me in French although he knows I don’t understand. I do my best but medical French is not my best suit. He has to repeat all in English and shows a level of irritated reluctance in doing so.

I have known worse. Brit GP pushed a comprehensive dossier of notes back across the desk at me, unopened, and said, “What do you expect me to do with these? I’m not interested”

Well, they were only the write- up of my 3 1/2 days in an ICU in Poughkeepsie. NY. USA, having had some sort of ‘nervy turn’ - all of a sudding, like, I blacked out - gone. No test known to medical science had not been run. Plus a visit from the chaplain and the trick cyclist.

Another GP was delighted to have them.

And I did - “Jus’ like that! … haha!” as dear old Tommy Cooper would say.

The pharmacy tipped me off to a health centre off the main street in Torigni. I sloped up there with a view to finding a nurse to take blood for testing and giving a tetanus jab. I saw this

Smart, clean, modern. Someone to cover all bases, from diet to teeth to feet to the psyche.

Such a difference from

That front door has lost a lot more paint since this shot, in 2015. And with many a piece of paper taped on - no notice board or reception inside. When I first saw it I thought it was squat.

And the demeanor of the people working there was of a different order, too. Approachable and helpful as opposed to surly and dismissive. The doc has a secretary!

The doc may well not have survived in the days of The Terror. Dr Eric de Labrouhe de Laborderie. There’s also Dr K. Le Moullec-Bullenois and Nurse C. Pechard-Doublet - a classy joint only <10 mins as opposed to <20 mins away.

I’m all signed up. Result!

The fact that GPs can operate like that in France really worries me about the state of the service.

People vote with their feet, and move to a GP elsewhere. May be a hike as doctors few and far between in some places but at least yiu have a choice.

Gave up the G&T when we emigrated. But the dynamic duo of red wine and pressure socks works a treat!
Incidentally, make sure that you get an ordonnance for the socks – and that the pharmacist measures you to ensure the correct size. Too small and you will be desperate to get 'em off long before bedtime, too big and they won’t even look glamorous!
The other dynamic duo of Carte Vitale and mutuelle means the socks are cheaper than supermarket wine. [On the subject of which we can recommend SuperU’s own brand boxes, prices from about €12 to €19, all very drinkable.]
