Bastille day

I feel that the French have become somewhat embarrassed by the actual happening on the day rather than the event that it started. As a result they prefer to call it their National Day.

7 people rescued from the Bastille

2 not of of sound mine

Take all the rifles and forget the ammunition

If they prefer to call it their National Day I will go along with that and avoid any chance of causing a upset.

My question - when is Great Britain's National Day

Quite simply because that was the date in 1789 when la Bastille was stormed. So it's not exactly wrong but as you say, le quatorze juillet is what's used in everyday language (likewise le quinze août whereas others have a name - il ferragosto in italian for example) and the official title is la fête nationale. Why do the french say Londres and Douvres...! ;-)
