Hi,we renewed our policy on our car in August as usual,we paid in full for another year,we have now sold the car last week, but it is going to be a few months before we get another car to replace it.I haven,t had time to ask at our insurer,s office, but am i right in thinking that you can pause the policy and restart it a few months later and the time is added to your policy?Or was i dreaming that, thanks for any info.
My car insurance Groupama, my agent said I could, if my car is not used, any time I was away for a while. I have an underground garage, so would not be on the road. Just check with your car insurance.
I’ve never paused my insurance, but when I’ve sold cars the process has been to provide a certificate of cessation to cancel the existing policy and then take out a new policy for the new vehicle as and when required.
That’s not my understanding Colin. I believe cars in France need to be insured, whether they are in an underground garage (or a garden or field or whatever) or not. Have you been through the suspension process? I’ve few cars that do very few kms a year.
That is correct John, any vehicle with a viable motor that can be used on the road must be insured all the time and even if not roadworthy but stored where it can be accessed by others, should be insured in case of injuries. Your insurers will lower the premium for non-roadworthy vehicles, mine certainly did for my VW which was 35 years old but no longer used even though it did start, the tyres were flat and it was eventually stored on land behind the house but accessible to any kids who might be curious.
Hi John, I have not done the suspension. It was just that I was away, for awhile 6 months, when I seen the agent after that time, he said could have, stop the car insurance?. Now I am not sure, because you don’t need to display the insurance sticker on the windscreen now, so maybe the rule have changed, because it all done from the recognition of the car number plate .
I think the having to have insurance rule has been around a long time now Colin. Even when you sell a car you need the certificate of cessation to cancel the policy. Some years back I left a car with a broker to sell and went off for a while and when he unexpectedly managed to sell it quickly I couldn’t cancel the insurance for a few months because he had the cert. Paying insurance on a car ones owns but doesn’t use is frustrating, but paying insurance on a car one doesn’t even own anymore is even worse ![]()
There is the possibility. Our beloved multipla (yes its a bit odd but I like quirky and 6 seats is awesome when you have kids, take out the rear seats and you have a van!) failed its CT (idiot CT place we were using at the time). J just didn’t have the time or health to do the repairs so we spoke to axa and they were fine to cancel the insurance as long as it was on our property and had the battery out. A good few years have passed and we actually are hoping to get it fixed and running as we may need a 3rd working car for the young’ins!
That’s good to know Tory, thanks.
I think the Multiplas are quirky too.
Hi John, I did get that confirmation from my car insurance agent, as you mentioned, the car needs to be insured at all times, must of been a mis translation on me, thank you for your replies. Colin.
You have to ask your insurers. We can’t tell you here. You’ve sold your car so you should get a pro rata reimbursement based on how long from renewal to sale. Then you start a new insurance when you get a replacement car. Price of new insurance will depend on what you buy. Any discount you had on existing policy should carry over.
There are insurance experts on this site, hence why i thought i would ask,or someone who might have done this recently, that,s what i was looking for,as stated,i haven,t had time yet to visit my insurance office.Think your guess sounds like what would happen in the UK,it,s not quite the same here,as it is a contract, not a policy.
I’ve had quite a bit of experience of various Insurance situations, but never waited to visit my Insurers when something “important” happened… “ that’s what the phone is for” I’d tell myself and steel myself to make that call. ![]()
then I’d follow their advice…
If unable to visit at least you could phone them (??) and advise them of the Sale.

Not so easy when you are not only working, but working away from home.I just thought initially that it might be a good idea to ask on the forum, but i was mistaken.Anyway,i have now managed to get the time to phone them and now have the answer.
I’m glad you’ve finally been able to make contact.
What was the answer???
