It’s a shame though that a certain Orange Maniac will undoubtedly use the occasion not to celebrate all that is good about the USA (which is plenty) but to rant, aggrandize himself and denigrate his enemies.

In order to avoid indigestion, I suspect the orange maniac will not be mentioned by any of us today.. we shall all be concentrating on the joys of Life in France … and apple pie!

There is a bit of a ‘do’ at the salle this evening, nothing to do with the USA I think but the new Maire presenting his councillors to us and something to do with a ‘mai’ planting. Of course there will be a drink or two to be had before I go to meet my friends for a meal in the occasionally opening bar next door. 
It’s worth remembering France’s support for America during the Revolutionary War of 1775-1783 not only played a significant part in the final American victory, it also left France with a huge financial debt that would become one of the key triggers for the French Revolution.

Yes indeed, the States’ oldest ally and I was doubly critical of Bush and his wars while being nasty to France because Jacko would not join in. Unlike a previously highly thought of (by me) British PM of the time.
As to the trigger for the French Revolution, not all bad news then.

Can any American truly celebrate the state of Trump’s America? Foreign, Non-white, handicapped or poor, must feel that they aren’t living in the same US.
About 30 percent seem to be very happy with the way things are going. The rest of us will just have to wait until the next opportunity in November to change things. Unfortunately, that will just be a start , with the Supreme Court in his pocket.

But if Congress has a Democrat majority they could at least start making his life difficult, couldn’t they? I would really like to see him having to answer for conflicts of interest, fleecing the country and so on.

If the House goes Democrat it might help a bit. They would be able to investigate and get cabinet members to testify, but they will just lie or not show up. Getting the Senate would be more useful. Problem is that the system was designed assuming those in power were honorable people.

Daughter sent photos of the display in Nashville last night. Felt sad not being there after the wonderful show last summer but this year they outdid it and the drones were much better, all this along with the fireworks and the city Symphony Orchestra playing all free as was everything else apart from the parking which they booked during the week. Certainly celebrating the 250th anniversary in style there.
We didn’t have fireworks and I was right, although the American celebration was mentioned, it was all about our commune and the new council recently elected.
There was a tall, cut pine tree lying with red white and blue ribbons adorning it lying with its base close to the hole waiting for it and propped up at the top end with one small French flag for each of the new councillors and a large one for Thierry, our new Maire.
A mighty crowd had gathered and I met and greeted all that I knew. After a short speech the Maire called each councillors’ name in turn and they had to come forward to applause and unfurl their small flag so we got to know exactly who had been elected.
Then all the councillors grabbed 2 stout ropes and with one of them guiding the base into the hole they heaved it upright and located it into a collar which was fastened around it by a councillor up a ladder against the round pigeon building which the whole thing was attached to.
Afterwards we crowded into the salle where long tables were laid out with snacks and drinks, mainly kir.
I eventually fell sitting in conversation with 3 unattached ladies who I knew from different stages of my life here and it was a very jolly time. That went on rather longer than expected before I had to rush home to feed Jules and give him hugs before disappearing again to the bar where I met my other friends and we enjoyed our steak and chips dinner in the open air.
Got home just after 11 and was greeted by Jules, still happily back to normal and as I read in bed he joined me for a while.
What an evening and, to cap it all, I was very pleased to get the explanation of the change of Maire. Because my friend Jean had not been ousted or even failed to be elected, he had simply found both jobs too time consuming and decided not to stand for either. Thierry, one of those who with other neighbours, had come to my rescue in the forest before the Pompiers arrived, is well chosen.

Interesting that France might celebrate America independence day - I went to the opening event of the Cannes fireworks festival yesterday and they started with the American national anthem. Then the serb national anthem because that was the pyro team. Not convinced that after bombing Sebrenica, changing to fireworks might wash all that away, well time moves on.
Anyway, as there is a thread for 4th July, and most people like fireworks, as ever here’s a few pictures. First of the beach - crowded
and looking out to see you can make out all the boats lined up in the bay to watch the show
and a few piccies of the show, which was very, very good. Everyone can go online to vote for the winner.
