Via Euronews: Nord Stream: Russian gas pipe leaks could have an ‘unprecedented’ environmental impact

And here we are trying our best to protect the planet.

That leaking methane…

In such a troubled world it comes with a sigh of relief that Brazil will now be governed by someone who can turn the tide, environmentally, in the right direction, and the madness of Bolsonaro’s devastation of the Amazon rainforest, hopefully, will be gone.

It really depends upon what the army does. They, along with the various police forces and allegedly many private paramilitary forces support Bolsonaro. Hopefully, things won’t get bad in that respect.

Can anybody here think of any reason Nord Stream was sabotaged?
UK media implies Russia did it, but this looks completely irrational. The internet meanwhile is awash with theories that America did it, which seems to make far more sense.

The Internet is awash with all kinds of crazy theories.
You seem to have picked the one that fits with your own preconceived point of view.

Similsr to the one saying UK has only 2 days of gas left whilst france has 105. Only it was posted at least a week ago.

Wow…! Bolsanaro concedes - will abide by the Brazilian Constitution…

https://www.axios.com/2022/11/01/bolsonaro-speaks-after-election-loss

“Now we will fight for zero deforestation in the Amazon. Brazil and the planet need the Amazon alive! One tree standing is worth more than thousands of illegal timber illegally extracted in the name of easy profit that costs the planet’s deterioration. A river with clean waters is worth much more than all the gold extracted with mercury that kills the fauna and puts human life at risk. When an Indigenous child dies, murdered by the greed of environmental predators, a part of humanity dies with them. That is why we will resume the monitoring and surveillance of the Amazon, and combat any and all illegal activities, whether they be mining, logging, or improper cattle ranching. At the same time, we will promote the sustainable development of the communities who live in the Amazon region. We will prove that it is possible to generate wealth without destroying the environment.”

What are those theories Jane? - I haven’t ‘picked’ any of them - indeed, I honestly haven’t come across any (other than the 2 I mentioned).

Viewed from any angle this looks an irrational act, but given the amount of very obviously fake news coming out of Russia (what we used to call propaganda - I’m certain Geof knows the origin of that word!), one is given to assume it was damaged by the Russians, who apparently had three trawlers in the area and it fits their strategy of restricting eneergy supplies. It also hints at the future vulnerability of underseas communication networks.

I don’t really see any advantage for the West in damaging the pipeline except to make Russia look worse, but given everything that the Russians are already doing, that seems pointless

But the question is why would Russia damage the pipeline when they could simply turn off the supply? (And they have $millions invested in the pipeline.)

Anyway, it was the Royal Navy.

Apparently.

Good question, why would they? Puzzling.

The media always want to find a bogeyman gives them endless oportunity to increase click bait.

The pipeline can be repaired/ is being repaired? As I suggested above it’s way of signalling the vulnerability of underseas communication networks. Also, though this might be a coincidence, the Shetlands’ undersea internet cables have been broken twice around that time. The official explanation is probable damage by trawlers and this may well be the case OTOH…

You haven’t heard of Q Anon?

Well, that’s a bit far from this topic Jane !
So do I take it you weren’t even referring to ‘crazy theories’ about who sabotaged Nordstream at all?

s
Unconvincing. Do you really believe the sea-bed engineering specialists and counter-terrorism advisers to governments had previously overlooked this vulnerability?

Haven’t you heard all the fuss about Truss texting Blinken on her hacked private phone to say “It’s done”, allegedly coinciding with the act? Russia of course says the UK did it.
But I couldn’t possibly comment because I just don’t believe anyone any more!

No, but that doesn’t mean the Russians wouldn’t send out reminders of that.
