If you have bought home heating oil recently, may I ask how much it cost you per litre? I’ve had an unsolicited email offering oil at €1.12 a litre.
Likewise, what does it cost to have a boiler serviced in 2025? The same email quotes €220.
And while I’m at it, (unconnected with the email) am I right in thinking that ‘fioul’ is standard home heating oil and is the same as what we call ‘kerosene’?
Now, I am awaiting confirmation, but I think the recent order we put in for 500L of home heating oil delivered to an address in East Sussex cost us about £280. That’s the equivalent of about €330, I think. On the site that Jane shows about, 500L of Fioul Ordinaire would cost €559.50 (price taken just now - may fluctuate). That a big difference! Anyone know why?
Heating oil is taxed heavily here for environmental reasons, there is a special tax called Taxe Intérieure de Consommation sur les Produits Énergétiques. France’s policy is to move away from fioul for domestic heating.
Hi @JaneJones, just as a point of information, I found an older oil bill from 2024 (couldn’t find the most recent one) for an oil delivery in the UK and it says we have kerosene. We are in an oil-buying group - an enterprising neighbour takes our orders and negotiates a price with an oil delivery firm - so all the members of the group get the same product. To be honest, until I checked this old bill, I didn’t really know what were we getting, we just ordered ‘oil’ . Every day’s a school day . . . .
But could be gas oil (= red diesel) depending on your installation. Probably not so much of that around but when my dad installed an oil fired system in the 60’s it definitely ran on red diesel.
It’s confusing, especially as different languages use similar words for different things.
so, kerosene, diesel and domestic-heating fuel are all different products…
and our Mairie asks it’s residents if they wish to take part in a bulk purchase of Dom Fioul .. it works much cheaper than going-alone as they can get a discount for a bulk order.
