Customs car stickers

I’ve been sent a link which states that Caen is issuing stickers to UK registered cars driven by CdS holders.

If true I cannot see how this would work. On entry to France a check would reveal the CdS and UK plate connection possibly ending in seizure of the vehicle as several have been reported. recently.

Does anyone have more information? There was a link to E-plaque in the original post but there is nothing in that website about car stickers.

For the removal of doubt I assume you meant to say that the douanes at Caen-Ouistreham ferry port are supposedly doing this…?

Maybe post the link you received here?

Interesting. Are you sure it wasn’t a wind-up?

… or some kind of marketing ploy.

I like it!

Clever Douane chappies - getting folk to make their job easy by telling them where to look!

But to your question, no, not heard of it.

Per chance, did they indicate exactly where to adhere said sticker…?

What kind of sticker?

It was sent to me by my daughter. It’s a face book entry by a company providing services to UK people living in France. I don’t do FB. Briefly…

Weve been made aware that two clients with CdS have been fined heavily for not having French registered cars…
Please be aware that at Caen port a new system is being trialed where vehicles entering France display a sticker.

It’s not dated so I now suspect it originated on April 1st

What is true is that people have been pulled up for illegally registered cars.

There was a convincing post made about this new sticker on 07/04/2025 on the Farcebook ‘Brittany Ferries passenger forum’ page. It all seems quite genuine.

I’ll find out more as I’m travelling back home to Ouistreham tomorrow, 13/04/2025, in my fully French car, so I’ll report in a while.

I wonder if this is based on a misunderstanding of the applicability of Crit’Air stickers?

Both Caen and Le Havre instituted Crit’air zones as from 1st Jan 2025. The Caen zone includes the ring road so will affect people driving to and from the port at Ouistreham, unless they plan amore circuitous route.

I don’t think the post I was mentioning was related to that, as this screengrab shows…

OK. Google doesn’t have much apart from this thread…

This was posted by a well established local handholding company and if they say two of their clients have been ‘caught’ I’m willing to believe them.

‘ We’ve recently been made aware of two clients with French carte de sejours who have been fined large amounts at the French Ports for not having a French-registered vehicle.
Please be aware that at Ouistreham port (Caen) and possibly others, a new system is being trialed where vehicles entering France display a new sticker that identifies the occupant as an EU resident (based on holding a current and valid CdS). This is therefore flagging-up those with UK-registered vehicles who are then subject to potential impoundment or fines.’

Now thats out in social media, presumably not displaying the sticker would be the wise if not naughty idea? Unless it is put in by an official and therefore illegal to remove in some way? A bit like Crit air, if you dont register your UK vehicle is there much chance of being caught, if you have a french registered vehicle then any un certificated vehicle can easily be traced.

That was my first thought too.

  1. Arrive at Ouistreham.
  2. Official applies sticker.
  3. Drive out of port; stop in first available car park.
  4. Remove sticker.
  5. Drive on merry way to destination.

Unless they make the stickers tamper-proof, but even a Crit’Air sticker comes off if a UK MOT tester tries hard enough.

Or just maybe …
Arrive at Portsmouth to check in
Show passport (and CdS)
If with CdS, BF check in puts sticker on windscreen

At Ouistreham, customs ignore french reg with sticker but pull over uk ones.

I’m currently at that point - sticker applied to the dangly vehicle pass thing at Portsmouth. We’re in our fully legal French car.

There are many French registered vehicles with no EU sticker, so I guess they are French passport holders.

I’ve seen at least two UK reg vehicles with said sticker also applied.

I’ll be watching very carefully when we disembark at 22.00 tonight.

So are French Immigration at British ports marking out any non-French driver by affixing a Yellow Star ?

So that non-French people are now visibly and publicly distinguished by this mark? Even after they have successfully passed through the French immigration desk and their passport has been checked and accepted at the English port?

Is this even legal? Why.am I thinking Right Wing or even Fascist? This does seem to be a human rights violation.

If you think that I think that you are missing the point completely. Surely the sticker is simply to make passage easier for those people who are obviously compliant while highlighting those who need checking. A simple effective triage system.
