Disposing of 60 bottles of alcohol

We have a wine rack which I want to get rid of.
It currently holds about 40 bottles of undrinkable wine and 20 of spirits.

I was going to put them down the sink, but am now wondering if doing that will be too much for the bacteria in the fosse?

Anyone know the science of all this?

Throw a party

No, the wine is totally undrinkable. We did a favour for someone many years ago and bought their wine off them. It wasn’t good then.

Opinion appears to be divided on just how much of an impact 30 litres of 12-14% ABV wine will have a thousand litre fosse, but the stronger spirits aren’t going to do the bacteria any favours.

Personally, I’d wait until the next heavy rain is forecast and tip it all evenly over a patch of the moss/weeds/wild grasses which laughingly passes for a lawn here.

Probably be fine to make wine vinegar, but I guess you don’t want 60 litres of that either?

I’m in the pour it onto the ground away from the house school of housekeeping.

You’re right.

One of the concerns with that amount of wine going into an active fosse is that you might end up with a whole load of vinegar in the first chamber which isn’t a great idea.

Give the 20 bottles of spirits away. I know our neighbours will always accept alcohol. Some drink it, some steep fruit in it, some use it in their delicious cooking thingies…

The wine can be chucked as suggested above if no-one wants to take it off your hands. There might be some magic formula which needs naff wine…

You’re lucky in your neighbours. Ours, some considerable distance away, would assume I am trying to poison them.

Good grief! Ask your French friends..
We always take a couple (or so) bottles of hard liquor on Club weekend trips.
The gang look forward to a nightcap before sloping off to bed. They never know what we’ll bring, but they’ve never been disappointed..

We’ve so much in the cave. It’s stuff we bought “Duty Free” on Day Trips, while still living in UK…
Being young and foolish, we bought stuff simply because it was such a bargain… and donkeys years later we brought most of it back to La Belle France

In your situation I’d offer the spirits to the mairie for commune fêtes etc and I’d try taking the wine to the déchetterie.

or cook a giant boeuf bourguignon

Except that most have already been opened, for the occasional guest or recipe (we don’t drink spirits).

Why not get into tartes flambées with the spirits? They’d probably power a réchaud too.

Do you think if I advertised on here that I am prepared to give away 60 bottles of alcohol of which 40 are highly suspect bottles of wine, and the rest are opened bottles of spirits ,that someone would take them?

I’m not into cooking / making vinegar / having a party / offering them to the neighbours or the mayor. But maybe someone on here might be prepared to do one or other of those things?

I very, very much doubt they are worth drinking in their own right, as a pleasant experience.

I would be prepared to drive up to 1 hour to somewhere like Agen / Bergerac / Langon / Fumel / Condom.

Thoughts anyone?

Throw it down any mole hill openings - that’s what I did with my gone off bottles from many years ago.

LeBonCoin ? (not Le bon vin )

Yes, but you could get sued, if somebody died, and then you’d be forced to drink bad wine, I bet they serve it in French prisons.

Started throwing the wine around over the bramble patches (of which we have many) - hopefully it’s not concentrated in one place so won’t be too harmful.

Of course, now I’ve started asking, he’s saying “keep that one”, “keep that one”. They are all whites. I never drink white, he does hardly. He’s proposing to inflict them on our friends who are coming to stay in August.

I’ve just realised that according to your post.. you have 20 opened bottles of spirits ???

Must be quite a selection  and I don’t think “spirits” ever go “off”.. so someone might as well enjoy drinking 'em.. surely you must know people who aren’t teetotal???

and, just a thought… your friends who are coming.. let them take some spirits home with 'em…
