Divorce in France - any admin to do in the UK?

I’ve got the jugement final for my divorce and it’s now being put on record in the mairie where we got married (ex is French) so that the livret de famille can be updated, and, for ex, in the mairie where he was born.

My solicitor tells me I have to notify the British authorities so that they can do the same.

Is this true? As I understand it there is no updating of one’s birth certificate in the UK, and no equivalent of the livret de famille.

Can anyone else who has gone through this advise? It looks like it’s impossible to contact the consulate these days, and in any case I never had the marriage recognised in the UK as I thought my life would be spent in France until the end of my days, so no need.

Thanks in advance.

Your solicitor seems to be assuming that the UK is like France. It isn’t, so you don’t have to do anything. Your French divorce papers are valid in UK. Only exception is if there are financial arrangements that need separating, or children.

Thanks, Jane.

So just another example of France’s obsession with paperwork!

Well yes, that of course - but also lack of knowledge that the UK system of birth certificates etc is ‘different’ - ie not the french way !! (Some times the best way is just to nod ones head - and agree - while knowing full well they are wrong !!)

Yes, that too!

As Jane J has said - it’s incorrect. The key factor as far as the UK is concerned, is that this has nothing to do with the UK authorities. You married in France; and you have divorced in France - so only French law applies to anything.

Bonnes Fetes!

Thanks for confirming what I suspected.

Happy holidays to you too!

I have no doubt that’s reciprocal. In fact I’d say none of the EU countries know the rules in any of the other EU countries. Too many permutations and combinations for anybody except the impacted to care about.
