Do we need a carte grise for our trailer?

I’d be really grateful if someone could clarify whether we require a carte grise for our new trailer. We purchased it in the UK and have a French reg car. It is a single axle, non-braked trailer. Dimensions are 258cm x 128cm x 40cm. It has a 750kg gross weight capacity, payload: 544kg.

HI, we are considering re-plating our small trailer but the new plate requires unladen weight (uw), gross vehicle weight (gvw) both of which we know and also AXLE WEIGHT Kgs. We don't understand what the axle weight is and as the trailer is no longer in manufacture so we can't find out. Do you happen to know what axle weight is ?

Let me know how you get on with the Carte Gris Nickie, will probabky have to do it myself x

thanks for this info. We have big (and heavy!) plans for the trailer and will be hauling renovation materials from the UK on a regular basis (top of the list is range cooker) so sadly I think we have to go the carte gris route.

You can put whatever weight plate you like on it and as long as you dont exceed the weight its fine. That rule applies to any trailer or car it has a stated maximum its up to you if you exceed the maximum stated weight and by consequence if you exceed the weight and get a fine so be it. If you use the trailer for trips to the dump its unlikely you will ever exceed the 500 Kg anyway. If you do exceed the 500 Kg as the norm then a carte gris is possibly the best way to go.

this explains why I’ve had so much conflicting advice. Thanks everyone. I love the idea of a new weight plate but suspect that Mr K will not countenance this

The rule is Carte Gris required over 500 Kg gross weight, used to be 750 Kg which is why so many trailers had a limit of 750 Kg

Sorry, have I been sleeping under a bush for the last 7 years?
What are the requirements for a trailer and a carte gris? Is one required for all types or those over a certain weight? Help!! I think ours is for a carrying weight of 500 kg.

cheaper to go on to eaby and buy a new weight plate for it and stamp it as a gross weight of 500 Kg its so close to the mark its not worth the agro and cost of getting a carte gris. Its what we did with a little caravan with a 650 Kg gross weight.

had a nasty feeling this was the case but have had a lot of conflicting answers. Thanks for the info

Fraid so!
