Down payment to buy a house in France?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering what the average percentage is for a down payment on a house in France, please? I know that might be like asking how long is a piece of string, but a rough idea would help!

Many thanks,

Mei Lai.

0, wow! Thanks so much Suzanne.

agree - we've just had the same discussion about our house. Our buyer is paying 5% as agent had already mentioned that to her. We would have preferred 10% which is what we paid on ours, but he said when he bought his house he paid 0!

Thank you so much for this speedy reply Andrew. That is great news. All the best, ML

5% is average, I've paid 10% before too and had other sales where the buyer refused to pay a deposit, which they can do, it's up to the seller whether they accept or not (if there's a mortgage involved, the buyer can easily ge the bank to refuse the mortgage and then not be bound to buy the property so the whole idea of a deposit is pointless. If it's a cash sale with no clauses sucpensives then a deposit is worth something, once the 7 day 'change of mind' period is over that is ;-)
