Has anyone any experience of raising equity on his or her French home? I am trying to find out how it works in France - if indeed it exists here.

Thank you all for your replies. You confirm what I thought. I shall now investigate whether any British firms might allow equity to be raised on a property in France.

Absolutely. I've heard that a house can be a collateral, but I've never met anybody who actually raised money that way.

It hardly exists here. You might get a banker to lend you money for a specific project with your house as a collateral, but that would be the most you'd get, especially if your home isn't a business and you live in it with your family.
