Experience of using 'not hotel' accommodation

Outside one of our local supermarkets a couple of companies have displays of places to visit / stay at / experience. One company I can recall is ‘Smartbox’.
What caught ny eye and rung a bell were offers around €70 a night inc. breakfast for a lodge/tree house/yurt …
So instead of forking out €100 or more, these lodges seem an attractive option. And there are many of them throughout France.
Any comments?

There was a piece on the news about them, just a few weeks ago, and the gist was that, quite often the voucher didn’t cover the cost of the accommodation that was described/implied by the packaging.

Very often, the advertised price is only valid on certain dates and under certain conditions. There are plenty of accommodation options in France without going through Smartbox or similar services—it’s Smartbox that makes money, not you or the host!

We have used Smartbox a few times over the years mainly as presents given and yes, you do have restrictions but on the whole they deliver what they say within those restrictions such as dates and upgrades etc. My son did the driving one, a day out at a racing circuit driving fast cars, us others did meals and overnight in certain regions and establishments, like anything unknown, you pays your money and you takes your chance etc.

Lots of restrictions!

You can find hébergement insolite for under €100 all over France.

Conditions always attached, and seemingly never available when we’ve wanted to use ours. We’ve had two different ones over the years, in the end never used, so complete waste of money for whoever bought them for us.
