Hello, I was walking along the towpath near to our village this afternoon and I came across a very skinny, ribs sticking out, female dog, no collar. She seemed very bemused and her legs looked weak. She was wandering along sniffing. I approached her and put down a couple of my dog treats for her which she wolfed down quickly. So I ran home and took back some more food and a collar, lead etc, you can probably guess the rest. I couldn’t walk away and leave her to starve. She is now curled up on a blanket outside with a lead on. I can’t let her in because my dog is being aggressive towards her. She had three huge ticks which I’ve removed with our little tool.
I’ve telephoned the vet but they are closed except for emergencies. The Mairie is of course closed until Monday… Do I call an emergency vet, go to the police or just wait until Monday to report it… What do you suggest? I’d really appreciate your advice on this, has anyone else found a dog?
Thanks for any help!
Jane
He is most likely upset by the state she is in - won't understand why she is like that.
Thanks Pam, but in reality, it’s thanks to all of you very kind people and to the useful information that was given on the Pheonix association website that she’s been reunited with her owners!
Well done Jane, I think you should give yourself a big pat on the back and pour yourself a big glass of wine.
One of my dogs I s an escaper and I hope if she ever got lost (touching wood, it’s not happened so far)that someone as caring as you finds her.
Just re-read this, of course I meant waggy not saggy! Lol
Cheers everyone!
So happy Jane! What a wonderful ending, reunited with the whole family. I'm sending you a big virtual hug for a job so well done. V xxx
Well done Jane. All's well that ends well. Makes me pleased we have Halley chipped so if she ever went missing we would be able to get her back.
Update! She’s gone with her family, they all came to get her, including two daughters. She was immediately saggy and happy to see them. He told me that she’s a hunting dog. Happy hunting Diane x
Yes, I’m really pleased, although I am going to hint to him about frontline because she was covered in ticks, I just found two more behind her ear.
He told me about a white mark on her chest that I hadn’t mentioned to anyone, so I’m happy!
How wonderful! And she's beautiful isn't she? Course she'll be expecting her morning tea every day now...
Well done you and so very glad that she was clearly an AWOL not abandoned - poss puppies were relatively recently weaned and she decided to have an outing to celebrate end of responsibilities and simply got herself lost.
What a beautifully happy ending :)
Here she is!
Big news! I’ve just had a call from the owner, he’s verified her tattoo number and name and is coming later to pick her up! Yay!
Re photo - can't see it would do any harm...
Hoorah indeed David, thanks for your support! I was pleased to see that she could function normally! I’d agree that she probably is an outside dog, she’s just settled down for another snooze quite happily.
She’s had pups at some point, and her tattoo identification from the Icad website puts her at about 4 years old.
I took a total of 6 huge ticks from her too, ugh! Put a bit of antiseptic on each wound, and she stayed very still bless her.they just know when you’re helping don’t they?
Do you think it’s okay to put a photo of her on here?
Hoorah! Re the tea, the business (even though everywhere!) and the walk. No doubt yours is just letting her know, politely, that you are HIS human and she must know her place - which no doubt she does.
She may, in her previous (or normal if she's AWOL as opposed to abandoned) life be used to living outside - round here I'd say about half the dogs do - they all have good shelters and room to run around but we only know a couple who actually live Inside.
David, I gave her some tea this morning and she loved it, thanks for that hint! She is much better this morning although she did do her business everywhere in the night, I’m glad I didn’t bring her inside!
I just took both dogs for a little walk and mine has calmed down for sure, he grumbled a little at her but soon stopped.
I didn’t take her inside, she didn’t want to come down the steps, and now I’m very pleased I didn’t because she did her business everywhere in the night!
I’ve just taken both dogs for a little walk and my dog was good to her, a few little grumbles but nothing major.
Good!
Glad could help - moral support at least as you seem to know just what to do!
Could be David, they are very weak and seem to be painful too. She let me pick her up though so hopefully it’s just that!
I just took him out for his last wee and he met her again, they had a good sniff of each other and he seems calmer now. Normally he’s gentle with other dogs once he’s met them properly so hopefully it’ll be okay tomorrow.
Thanks for your help!
