Hi there, I live in the UK. Last year my Aunt, who lives in France suggested that I get her vet to issue a French passport for my dog so that I can avoid having to pay for the AHC when travelling to see her, and also because my dog is likely to live with her in France for an extended period early next year. I have the passport, which is all up to date and he had a rabies jab in France. In a few weeks I will be catching the ferry to France and am a bit nervous about whether I will be challenged. My dog’s Microchip address is still in the uk. Does anyone else live in the UK with animals with French passports and do you encounter any issues when travelling to France?
Yes my daughter has French passport for her dog and has had no issues at all so do t think you need to worry
Ah thank you. So the microchip address being linked to a uk address isn’t an issue?
Hasn’t been. My vet here in France issued the passport My address here is used. Two trips made so far from UK with no problem. Should be ok for you too. Fingers crossed
Checking with daughter re microchip address. I don’t know if the local vet here changed it or not. Will let you know
Maybe I’m missing something, but I understood that the pet in respect of which the passport is issued must be registered on the I-CAD database, and that was only possible for owners resident in France (which the OP, on her own account is not).
Thank you Meggie , that’s really helpful!
We moved here before the Brexit referendum, if that’s relevant and were able to put our dog onto i-CAD with a UK chip and a UK/EU passport, with some help from the vet surgery. I don’t know if Brexit changed something.
To answer my own question, I just read online that you have to be resident in France to have a French dog passport.
My Aunt’s vet in France said that my dog would simply have to all his rabies vaccinations done in France and have a French address, which is my Aunts address.
Mmm that’s a bit of a concern, however presumably because I already have the passport, I’ll be able to use it, the same as Meggie’s daughter has been doing for a while.
Well, what’s the worst that can happen? Dog impounded, you fined for making a false declaration of where the animal lives (the I-CAD site is clear: it’s for animals living permanently in France, and you should inform them if the animal is moved permanently out of France). I don’t know how likely that is, or how vigilant the French authorities are.
I suppose it’s a question of attitude to risk. I wouldn’t have done it; your view may be different.
Leaving the UK, all they do is scan tbe chip to see if it corresponds to the number in the passport. Leaving the EU to enter the UK, chip is scanned, passport checked for valid rabies vaccination and worming treatment. No one worries about where the chip is "registered ", its just a means of identification
Meggie, there is a reasonable amount of personal information on that form, and you might want to delete it given this is a public forum? Bad actors love this sort of information…
Welcome to SF. Relax! You have the much sought after French passport. Busy ferry and tunnel staff almost certainly have more urgent priorities than quizzing your dog as to where he really lives!
From talking to relatives who’ve done the same as you, the only issue seems to be the one your vet has mentioned, which is that any vaccinations etc that are required for entry/exit have to be done in France. My UK based aunt has once or twice had to abandon urgent issues in the UK simply to get to the South of France to have one of her many dogs vaccinated. Apart from that, bon voyage…
Just had reply from daughter. Microchip address was changed by vet from Uk to my French address. How do I delete the phot I have put up. I have no idea but as George has kindly pointed out there is a fair bit of personal info on it…….help
No idea how to delete photo. Help. Needed please
Just deleted photos
Hi, the issue is the annual rabies jab. If yours is a 3 year one you are fine and passport vallid while jab in date, but you must renew it in France, because French do not recognise UK rabies vaccination.
We live in the UK and our dog has a French PP, his rabies inoculation was updated by a French vet a couple of weeks ago without any questions.
