Trying to avoid many endocrine disrupting chemicals and palm oil “soaps” a term that is pretty vague in the UK. Things like Dove in the UK cannot be called soap.
Turning to France I wondered what real soaps people buy, Any suggestions?

Many, many artisan soap makers plus shops like biocoop.
I buy huge tub of savon de Marseille copeaux and mix up what I want.
Mix up what you want? Could you explain a litte more please Jane.
I buy big bags like this. And for household stuff put a tiny, tiny handful in a container with very hot water and shake it up until it melts. Then dilute as I wish - tiny handful makes about a litre. For things like handwashing pop in a dispenser with a drop of current preferred oil.
I’m with @JaneJones on this, to a point. I buy great big rectangular blocks of Savon de Marseille and use it just as it is. Takes days or even weeks to wear all the corners off but lasts a helluva long time. ![]()
Was anyone else expecting this to be about Le Dallas, Carrefour or Robocoop?
I’ll type line, you keep up the good work ![]()
I buy savon de Marseille, soap made by an acquaintance (our children are good friends) who has a business and sells via BioCoop etc, or I make my own using this book
I was. I hoped someone could recommend one that’s good for practising French comprehension.
If you want French comprehension, never mind savon de Marseille (excellent though it is) check out
Ok don’t get into a lather about it.
Meanwhile I have only been in the lower end shops and seen bars of things proporting to be traditional bars of real soap packed in a sort of wraping that would suggest it but turn it over and its the same chemical ingredients bar as all the rest.
There’s a woman who comes to our market and sells artisanal soap, often made from asses’ milk.
Sounds like a Carry on.film, one liner
I will visit our local market at the weekend, there used to be someone who sold home made soaps but sadly that market has declined over the years.
Yes you can buy it in LeClerc under the bio section, probably not your lady but still donkey juice
I watch them all in the early evening on TF1 and enjoy all the backstabbing, stupid story lines and the events that keep happening to the same families. Very good for the learning but with local accents a bit difficult sometimes.
I bought some honey soap in the gift shop at Fontevrault Abbey once - it was ruinously expensive but quite nice and lasted for ages.
Probably not worth a special trip there to get it though. ![]()
Even homemade “pure” soap uses caustic soda in the making process because you don’t get saponification without it. Otherwise all you need is fat, vegetable or animal makes no difference.
Nice block of pig lard from Super U??
I’ve used duck fat from Inter. What I meant by no difference is in how it saponifies, how people perceive it will obv vary.
Yes, that’s me moisturiser ![]()
