Fuel injector?

Just had a service on our 1.9 VW diesil Passat.I have been informed that it requires a new fuel injector ASAP. The total cost would be 950 Euros ( cost of injector 650 Euros). This sounds high to me.Car runs and feel fine to me.What symptons would there be??

Any answers appreciated. Thanks Bill

Thanks for all the imput

From what I've read elsewhere, you might be able to hear a distict tick or "ping" sound when the engine is idling that would indicate a faulty injector. Other than that, I can't say, A quick look at the price per injector on here for a Volkswagen Passat (3b3) 1.9 tdi (130hp) gives a recommended retail unit price of 428 Euros :

so yes, its a fairly expensive piece of kit, in general (I have no idea whether that corresponds to your particular model).

If you can find a general diesel repair garage in your area (someone who does trucks, vans, and cars), you might be able to get it done more cheaply, at least with the labour, and possibly with the part too.

Just the one,As i am at the basic stage of learning French ,i could nt speak with him.He simply told my wife that one injector was dead.I am thinking of taking the car to Roady to have some Diagnosis done and see if it comes up. I don`t know what the symptons are ,as the car sounds and feels fine to me.?

Hi Bill,

Is that the price for just one injector, or for several ? Renault recently changed all four of mine in my Trafic van, luckily enough for free (otherwise it would have been 300 Euros per part plus labour) due to a known manufacturing fault in the parts that I had in my engine. The symptons : sudden engine cutout in damp or wet conditions, stuttering/coughing of the engine with loss of power. That's all I know, I'm afraid, but it might be worthwhile looking up on the net to see whether there is a known problem with them in your model/make.

Alex

you did say diesel, missed that earlier.

Way too expensive, with the modern ECU's you may not yet detect anything whilst driving as the program may well be able to adjust the injector to maintain the good drive.

Injectors do suffer as they can leak back or fail to close off/open properly or provide a poor spray pattern. There are companies in the UK who service them and replace any worn parts by mail order. You don't say if it's petrol or diesel, diesels required more expensive higher pressure test machines.

If a new injector is fitted this may well need coding to the ECU in order to communicate (read expensive con) like Fords do, which requires specialist expensive kit for what I can see is completely unnecessary dealer job compared to older non coded versions.

I think I would ask another garage for a quote Bill.

Well if it runs and drives OK then they had better have a pretty good reason for wanting to change it.

Just a local Garage in Civray

Is that quote from the VAG dealership?
