I’m a bit lazy, but also busy and sometimes in winter its cold, dark, freezing ect. Sometimes I just CBA going to the bottom of the garden with the compost. Last year I reused a bin I’d bought many years ago, from Gifi I think. It was black plastic with a lid that twisted and locked shut, a plastic version of the galvanised bins that used to be common. It was great as i could dump the compost in at the back door, and send someone else to empty it when full (winter only obviously). Sadly it’s died and I can’t find anything with a waterproof and locking lid suitable, I’ve tried big supermarkets, Gifi, Foille fouil (or whatever its called. ![]()
). Can anyone help? Have you seen something suitable? I’d love a galva one but would bhave to wait until Xmas as only seen them in the UK.
Here you go just fit a lock https://www.amazon.fr/poubelle-a-roulettes/s?k=poubelle+a+roulettes
I think castorama used to have the type of bin you describe toryroo
Poubelle d’extérieur recyclable EDA noir 80L
found it, less than €10
I’ve got one of them from back in the good old days before SDM3 destroyed the Dordogne, its a small, maybe 60l round bin with a lid I need. Thanks anyway ![]()
Perfect! Just what I need! Sadly no Castorama but I’ll now try the other Bricos. EDA is everywhere in France. Actually I might see if my local quinquillarie has or can order it for me.
Have you looked on LBC?
I use a standard wheely bin but like the look of those pedal versions. The lid on the wheely does not stay up if it is against the wall and I have nearly had my hands chopped off several times as a result.
Cunning (but Obvious) Plan no 48B: move your wheely bin a couple of inches away from the wall so the lid can lean against it.
Space, dear boy, space, lack of it. Also, as it is a wheely bin, when you lift the lid it automatically pushes it away from you, unless it is up against the wall of course. ![]()
A length of chain cut to required size , 2 bolts, 2 nuts & 4 washers.
Or two blocks of wood glued to the bin and lid respectively. And a forked stick ![]()
Even more cunning, place the bin sideways on to the wall. Wheely bins are shorter side to side than back to front.
Err, no it isn’t, not handles to handles, just measured it, almost the same. And then there is nothing to stop it rolling away into something else, at least against the wall it doesn’t do that, just have to remember to pull it towards me if I want the lid open wide. ![]()
Is everyone buying their wheelie bins? We have 2 given to us by the local commune. One for rubbish and one for recycling which has a yellow lid. Is it unusual to be given them.
Waiting now for a food waste bin small one. We do compost nearly all food waste but some things you cannot
Is everyone buying their wheelie bins?
Not the communal ones, no, the one I have is in the kitchen, for kitchen waste, alongside the recycle bag. The ones just down the hill where these 2 go, in their separate bins, are provided by the commune.
Came across a bin for recycling food waste next to the bottle bin and paper bin in the next village. Food waste takes about everything except oyster shells. I was only asking a neighbour recently about recycling food waste. Our food waste in Oxfordshire gets taken from its own waste bin and is used to make electricity. The bin for garden waste is recycled into compost. We have 5 bins in total and they provide a very good service.
You are lucky! Bloody SDM3 here in Dordogne offer nothing ![]()
And the good news is I found the exact bin I had, in silver, which is nicer than black yesterday in TEDi (similar to Action but German, excellent range of cute stationary, pens ect if like me you like that sort of thing!).
The old French couple we bought our house from used to crush his oyster shells for the chickens.
We use a carefully washed oyster shell in our kettle. We have hard water and it collects the deposits on it
