TBH I’d not use Waitrose and don’t know booths. But Autun could do with a supermarche that offered both Tesco’s quality and prices.
agree entirely - plus what about the rotten onions and spuds - I would take them back to Tesco - here peeps just roll over …
First, I’d say don’t buy potatoes in bags, buy them loose. Not only can you pick but they’re always better quality and last longer. Second, where are you buying a small bag of potatoes for €5 ?
If you have a Grand Frais near you, I would always recommend them for fresh fruit and veg. Ours don’t sell in bags, only loose. Although Grand Frais can be an expensive place to shop for some things, their fruit and veg are very competitively priced, good quality and always fresh. They keep the inside of their stores at around 15 to 17 C to keep the fresh produce in good condition.
Would love to buy loose potatoes…but they are even more expensive,4.79€/kilo the other day in Super U,so 2 kilos would be 9.60€,i wouldn,t pay it,we don,t have a Grand Frais, the prices that i quoted were in Super U.
Well, just looked online at our local Carrefour, which unfortunately doesn’t show prices for loose potatoes, but a general purpose Primeur potatoe that we buy loose can be had in a 2.5Kg filet for €1.79 per Kilo. The loose price is very similar. If you really want to pay the sort of price your talking about, then you can, but why would I.
Yup nearest SuperU often touches 6.80 euros for 2.5kg potatoes. Loose not necessarily cheaper and very much a matter of timing as to quality. Onions about 3 euros per kg- can be more. Bananas recently have gone from hovering about the 1 euro area per kg to 2 euros or upwards per kg - price not an indicator of quality- cheapest are often by far the best.
I know a lot of people won’t shop at Lidl for snob reasons but their fruit and veg is excellent quality, they seem to get daily deliveries and the prices are a fraction of Super U ect. Potatoes are usually 1-1.2e/kg.
I agree and here a lot of it is locally grown with the name of the grower on the boxes and its so much better than the big supers in quality terms too!
I buy single potatoes, carrots etc only from Auchan because it is the only place where I can handle and inspect the produce for at least 15 kms or maybe even further. The quality of the produce is generally good but, in any case, I only buy the best that I see.
I suppose if I had a family to feed I may have to take my chances with more bulk buying but buying 7 potatoes, 1 carrot, 1 pepper etc. a week, cost is hardly of interest to me.
Just a couple of days ago I bought a 5kgs net of potatoes for 4.99 in grand frais., buying vrac was double the price!
Agree with Tory Lidl have been having some lovely potatoes recently, offers can be 99c a kg, next week.
I found that shop very expensive in comparison and not all was that good a quality either. I always look in the gaspiage box at the end of the fruit and veg section as you can often find stuff that is still very good but the date has expired and to some folks that is like having a crucifix thrust in front of them if they were vampires!
I’ve not seen one of those, I now have this image in my mind of an English lady with her legs sticking out ofthe top with rummaging noise coming from within.
Wow, you really take your time to examine the goods, don’t you David!
You’ve clearly met my wife.
Totally agree, but I nearly always pop in if I am passing. It is only good value if the offers are something you want
You bet, it’s so cool in there in summer, and warm in winter, and there’s lots of lovely people to while away the time with.
In support of Lidl and price of potatoes they are currently available at 96 cents per kilo if you use the Lidl app. A very useful tool which I always study before entering the shop. One of their best coupons is a 4 euro reduction if spending more than 35 euros!
I don’t miss Tesco.
Lidl are good like that and have often put trays of all sorts of stuff for €1 each near the tills so if you want some fruit and veg on edge of not looking so good but OK to eat, they are well worth buying especially in the winter for hearty soups and stews etc or even for animals if you have pigs etc.
My DIL is the same, any yoghurt a day over the date goes straight in the bin - at my house, I eat them for weeks after the dates go off and also feed them to the grandkids without her knowing.
Tesco was never my supermarket of choice before leaving the UK. I was a Sainsburys devotee and sometimes an Asda visitor, but Tesco, horrible place!
