We live near Cognac in Charente and have never experienced anything like that.... in fact the opposite as everyone in our village and surrounding area has been very welcoming! We have 3 kids who go to the local school and run a busy business - we very much feel part of the community.
I belong to a lot of networking / expat groups and have never heard anyone mention that they have experienced this.... perhaps we are just lucky?!
