Hi-fi speaker question

It’s not really an SF topic but I think there are a fair few people here who will be able to help, and - given room sizes and materials are different here - may know more than the average :united_kingdom:-based person.

I’m thinking - being careful not to let Madame know  - of changing from floor-standers (Monitor Audio Silver S6, vintage 2000AD) to stand mounts. The MAs are behind the sofa and you see only the top 10cm, which means - I assume - that the sofa is absorbing some of the sound.

The room has hard walls and floor.

I think the sound could be clearer, but I like the general feel of it. The amp is a Cyrus 7 of the same vintage as the speakers. We listen to all sorts, probably mostly classical, jazz and rock.

What difference would having stand-mounted speakers make?

A photo of the current set up might help - AIUI the S2 is a “bookshelf” monitor so I assume you are talking about putting them on them on higher stands?

Which should be fine.

Not sure which model you currently have as searching brings up several types even with the year info. Perhaps a picture. With more modern speakers a fair amount of base can be had out of a smaller drive unit. Base I would suspect be your biggest difference. That said many hard surfaces as you described can mess up base considerably.

With stand mounts you can be more directional with mids and highs and not be constrained by base frequencies. I have a sub woofer tucked completely out of sight just to fill in lows that some music demands but more when watching films.

I took the plunge with my Q acoustics concept 20’s mainly due to the very innert cabinets no colouration or box at all and the sound stage is fantastic. I think it’s JohnH that has the concept 30’s which have a slightly larger woofer. I love the sound, placement as usual is very important.

No, these are floor-standers. But you’re right: my idea is to elevate the speaker (which is why I’m thinking of stand-mounted speakers, maybe the KEF LS50s).

Hated the kef ls50’s over hyped, very directional. The guy I bought my concepts from kept in contact with me and also took his back saying he just couldn’t get them set up right.

OK, so you’re thinking of replacing the MA’s

Googling “Monitor Audio Silver S2” produces only images like this one

Are you keeping the amp?

I have a pair of JBL control one’s which are probably not going to be your thing, or some small Teac’s the exact model of which escapes me (they are in the UK and I’m en France for a few more days).

What’s your budget (I’ll keep your secret from Madame, promise)

Well this is jolly embarrassing

They’re S6s not S2s, so if edited my first post

Sorry

I also don’t rate them.

Similar price, I quite like Rega Kyte and they are British made. I have, however, not heard them connected to Cyrus

I wouldn’t want to spend more than around 1500€ (unless I sell my best bass, which is on the cards) on speakers because I don’t particularly rate my ears beyond that - diminishing returns - we both chose the MAs and the Cyrus at Moorgate Acoustics in Sheffield, and they were around the £700 mark each then.

As for amp - I perceive you are a prophet! - I have my eye on the Arcam A15, but that might need to wait a year.

Look at the MA Silver 100 7G if your pockets are deep enough, or the Bronze 100 if they are less profonde.

Oh, right - so the Silver 100 should be well within budget.

The review has a couple of other suggestions - given how much the reviewer goes on about the bass they might not be the best 'speaker for jazz but classical and rock should work well.

Thanks - that’s an interesting read.

Time to invest in hanging tapestry

Egg boxes work well and are a low cost option but there may be a slight reluctance from partners.

And to add to the confusion the same chap on the Q acoustics concept 30’s

The 20’s have a much easy to live with stand which much to my surprise did make a difference over my usual stands

That won’t tame the base which is often the rooms biggest issue. Easy to knock highs down if the room is too bright though.

You should see the results when I make IKEA furniture.

No they don’t, 1970’s myth. Far better and proven ways to tame room issues which are really important as the room is an extension of the speaker. A bad room could make a €500,000 system sound bad.

Blimey - even Amazon sell acoustic panels these days. How times have changed.

Could you just move the speakers to the side of the sofa?

Which does suggest that you would benefit from some dampening on the walls.
