Hello all. I would like for various reasons to hide my IP address. I once tried Expat Shield but it was a disaster, and I had to delete it, do System Restore, etc.
That was a couple of years ago, and I'm just wondering if there is anything out there these days that you would recommend.
sheila, you can use TOR, or onion browsers, I personally use sumrando "www.sumrando.com. It lets you choose a country, if you wish, or else automatically connects you to a server in, say, sweeden.
I use it all the time, and never notice any difference, only someone whos blog I follow once told me "you never follow my blog anymore, I've nobody from France, but on a side note, i've a couple of people in sweeden.
www.unotelly.com ....you just put thier DNS server address into your router ....job done all devices on your network can watch iplayer or anything else you can see in the UK
Hi Elaine. Hope all is well with you. Possibly the reason you could watch the LLS Toy Show was because it was decided to broadcast it interntionally. When I go to iPlayer, the live programmes are blacked out and it only shows what I can view. Crucial on occasion to watch Rabo Direct Leagues that are not shown on Sky.
"I so much prefer talking to other SFN members who post a photograph"
I'm with you Sheila. I work on the principle that if "they" can't be bothered to show me their face why should I want to connect with them as it's a bit like talking to somebody who turns their back on you (Don't suppose anybody cares but it makes me feel better:-))
Sheila - I use StrongVPN into Maidenhead (UK) and have very good quality pics streaming live TV. Unfortunately they don't have any servers in Dublin, or anywhere in the Republic, for that matter. If you need an Irish IP address, try searching for VPN Ireland. There are quite a few offers, but I'm afraid I haven't tried any of them.
I support a number of Irish friends with Irish Sky TV by satellite, but you've probably got that already.
Another option could be a SurfEasy USB key. I bought one a while ago and it seems to work effectively. It provides an encrypted connection to the company's servers in America and accesses the internet from there. This encryption supposedly prevents unsavoury people from intercepting your internet traffic (particularly useful in internet cafes or whenever you're using someone else's computer) and has the additional benefit of allowing you to change your IP address to the UK, US or Brazil. When I finally reach the shores of France early next year, I should be able to access BBC iPlayer and other UK-centric content, or TV shows on American streaming services. The tiny USB key contains your passwords and other security stuff, and this information is never available to snoopers in a readable format. Mine came with unlimited free usage but I believe there are other "plans" with a monthly or annual charge. The only downside is that I can't see a way to use it with my "smart" TV, so I'll be stuck with watching content on a computer. Another selling point for me is that it's a Canadian company - and as a half-Canuck, this gives me the satisfaction of supporting the economy of God's own country.
Note to self: Got to change that ridiculous selfie.
As I said, what I do, for Live TV I normally use Filmon, but if I want to use iplayer etc for catch up, then I use the Hola extension for chrome, which enables you to mask the ip address to the relevant one for the country that you need it for.
I also have a program that a friend gave to me which includes a browser (firefox) which runs under the onion/tor network and enables you to use the firefox browser included as if you are in the UK (and I think anonymous as well). If you want the file, I can send it to you or put it into my dropbox for you to download.
Normally though, the hola extension (which is free) does all I need.
Last year we were featured in a TV programme made in our own country. I wanted to show it to a friend but the TV station concerned wouldn't let me access their Player because they detected a French IP address. If I can either mask the IP or select an Irish IP address, then I could access the programmes. Ok, I know, I know, I haven't paid the licence fee there but.....
