I am none of those things - what I am averse to is software that owes its very existence to stealing people’s images, words and other intellectual property off the internet, with no permission given and no recompense made, devised by people who are presumably earning a very nice living from their depredations.
Copyright laws were passed to stop this very thing - these people are running a coach and horses (or electric SUV if you prefer a more modern metaphor) through that, and getting away with it.
A planning application has been submitted for a vast new data centre “campus” on the site of the former Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters in South Gyle, on the western outskirts of Edinburgh, which was demolished in 2022.
Initial projections suggest the data centre could be responsible for 200,436 tonnes of C02 emissions annually.
These emissions are broadly in line with the annual emissions of nearby Edinburgh Airport, based on the airport’s own energy use and the C02 emitted from planes during take-off and landing.
The sad thing, as we may have said before, is that data centres consume a lot of resources and create hardly any jobs. I wonder if HMG have understood this.
Water is an issue as well as electric and CO2 etc. And jobs to set it up sound great but then all the jobs disappear and you’re left with a giant industrial plant
I think HMG know this only too well, but firmly believe the vast majority of voters don’t and that’s what they’re banking on. Unfortunately, they’re right!
My OH read somewhere (I have no links, sorry) that’s it’s going to take more power to run the plants that they’re building than will be available by the time they’re finished.
