My understanding of Hungarian politics is pretty much nonexistent, but I don’t think I’ll be sad to see Orban defeated. A pro-European Hungary is good for all of us.
Polls have closed and counting begun.
The BBC has a tracker here which I dip into every now and again…
It is and it seems to be contagious. Hopefully Vance has swung it for the opposition, as soon as the US or other Right wing foreign visitors start arriving to support the Right wing incumbent it seems to inspire those against to get out and vote.
With the help of AI – “This victory gives the incoming government the same sweeping powers Orbán once held, and would rank among the most dramatic electoral turnarounds in modern European politics.”
Having lived in Budapest for a time the sentiment in the capital will be of good riddance. The countryside we will see. Certainly he propogated a regime that Hungarians are well rid of.
What is it with rural dwellers? It’s the same world over. I suspect city dwellers tend to be younger and more cosmopolitan, while in rural areas with fairly homogeneous populations there’s more conservatism. Certainly in Russia older folk look back with rose tinted specs at the 1970’s, when there were queues for bread and no elections. Nowt as funny as folk.
Seems that Italy’s PM, Giorgia Meloni, a real Trump favourite, has condemned his attack on the Pope, and Trump is now attacking her, as you’d expect. Another ‘friend’ lost.
Surely it’s not just me who is a bit suspicious at how smooth a transfer of power in Hungary seems to have been.
No reports of election interference by Russia. Is this a sign of a change in their chessgame tactics?
I don’t think there’s any belief that Russia didn’t interfere, more that it utterly failed. Similarly, I suspect the weight of public opinion was so strong that Orban had little choice.
There remains a concern that Orban’s control of the media and influence on the courts will be deployed to make like difficult.
