I have to say it, the silence on this genocide shames us all

Thank you both, it is as I suspected and @Roger_Lapin averred.

What with this and the other thread (@Roger_Lapin’s) . my good news will keep to another day.

And David the declared intention now (Smotrich, Ben-Givr et al) is to remove them. The right of return is certainly still active for Jewish people from elsewhere, but not for displaced arabs.

However, I read a report in Haaretz this week about how even Jewish people who are deemed to be too sympathetic to Palestinians are having some difficulties.

Good news?
Go on… I have been doing some hedge tidying and am about to shower and have a sit down before dinner. I hope to see summat later this evening.

I think you missed the ‘day’ bit. Struggling to remember anything I did today which was positive.

So swept out all the construction rubbish left over from the bird hide but had to leave it all up there because nowhere to put it. 2 heavy duty roof panels not needed due to my redesign, but I have an inkling where I might use them so they can be brought down with the rubbish, I then sat on a newly derubbished chair and relaxed looking at the view above. Could have been there for the night but haven’t got the sunlounger installed yet.

So if that qualifies as good news I’ll be forced by the guvner with the ears to relocate it elsewhere.

Sounds like a job done. Not the end of the project, but another stage completed. :+1:
Sounds good to me.

There are some differences in their treatment, but it’s nothing like how Hamas treat people of different races, religion, sexuality or gender (hanging, usually).

Why is Hamas treatment of people relevant to how Israel treat people? No-one here has expressed approval for the way Hamas treat minorities they don’t approve of in any way, and I can see no relevance to this other than as a ‘look over there at those terrible people’ type distraction.

It’s relevant because the only part of the war in Gaza that is ever criticised is Israel. If I’m the only person to provide balance, so be it.

It’s a constant feature of pretty much every thread here, and typical of the way the liberal West views the conflict. Hamas good, Israel bad, like some kind of Animal Farm simplism. It’s important to maintain a bit of balance: Hamas is an abominable regime which treats its own citizens as expendable, uses them as human shields, and seeks the destruction of Israel. Israel likewise seeks the neutralisation of the threat from Hamas and has chosen to bear the responsibility of harming the civilians, including children, whom Hamas fighters hide behind, and probably don’t regret it.

Unless you constantly point out that each side is as bad as the other, you’re not maintaining a reasoned analysis.

I reject your view, that Hamas is presented as good. Rather it’s often mentioned that the atrocity of Oct 7th was performed by Hamas, and the numbers of those killed frequently comes up.

However Hamas are also responsible for the infrastructure and running - as far as is possible - of Gaza. In this context they operate like any other government and don’t require the atrocities to be mentioned any more than the genocide by Israel needs to be mentioned when talking about hospital admission in Israel. Israel’s action committing genocide and displacement of population keeps coming up because they keep doing it - they have passed the point of equivalence a long time ago.

Would we want Hamas returned to power in Gaza? Absolutely not, but that’s not a bridge we can cross right now.

Expect Somalia to require a new president soon…

I didn’t realise that Somalia had a government, I thought it was just a group of warlords fighting for control.

A bit like the USA come November?

Can we unpick that a little?
Formally Hamas does not recognise Israel, but it has signed to recognise the pre 1968 (6 day war) borders.
Hiding behind civilians? Gaza is such a crowded area there are no places away from civilians.

Yes. They would rather kill many Palestinian Arabs of any age, rather than risk one Israeli military member. That is not a balanced response to risk.
… …
Hamas only came into existence in the 80’s or 90’s. It was initially welcomed by the Israelis as being less militant than some predecessors. If the Israelis had complied with international law then maybe they would not have become as extreme as they have. (Yep, an alternative reality I accept).

There is a vicious circle of violence in the ME. Israel could have done more to break it in recent years.
Under Yitzhak Rabin the Oslo Accord signed with Yasir Arafat did seem to be the way to go. Under Netanyahu, Israel is going in the dead opposite direction.

Obviously, there is no easy answer. All sides have real grievances against the others.
At the moment it is likely to get worse, as there are no leaders anywhere to calm things down, either in the region or away from it.

Nah, that’s just Tuesday in Minnesota.

Doubt they will win, but Minnezota has been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

Jared Kushner has not been nominated.
(No gasps of surprise there)
This past week it emerged that Kushner is the sole owner of a company that is heavily invested in Israeli defence industries. Because he is not elected to any office, is not employed by any US gov office, he is not subject to any offical scrutiny in his financial as he continuea in his role as one of Trump’s peace negotiators.

Is that all over the press in the US and UK?
Nah, to borrow the phrase, just another day our present world.

Do you have a source to support that - I’m not challenging your statement, rather want to see where the info came from.

And now all the news about Qatar sending the Palestinians economic support channelled through the Israeli govt and it ending up being given to Hamas. I really hope Netanyahu is for the high jump after this, there are obviously no limits to the extent to which he will allow people in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, of any denomination, to be killed and terrorised in order to preserve his own skin. Incidentally the IDF has killed over 70 journalists in 3 years.
There was a very interesting prog on France Inter about it today, I listened to it as I drove down from Germany.
