Today it has been announced that the Scots author Iain Banks has cancer and is unlikely to live longer than a year and latest novel The Quarry set to be his last. He seems not to have lost his sense of humour, having announced that he is "officially very poorly" with gall bladder cancer and is expected to live only for several months on his website. His close friend and fellow Scots author Ian Rankin said Banks's comment on asking his wife Adele if she would do him the honour of "becoming my widow" was typical of the author. I read 'The Wasp Factory' years ago which introduced me to his work. 'The Crow Road' has my favourite opening line to a novel, take a look and judge yourself if you have never read any of his work.
I had looked forward to many more books from him, 59 is so young and such a loss for the contemporary literature world.
