If anyone wants a ridiculously cheap house…

Yes, to a degree. But one has to exclude unrealistic buyers as well as unrealistic sellers. We actually didn’t go with price agent suggested but knocked it down €25k as thought they had overpriced it.

An alternative to going further north, is to go higher, we have many friends from northern Europe who live in the Cantal and don’t mind a bit of snow etc in exchange for cooler summers.

Courageous, what’s the cost of bridging here? Or will you use other funds or borrow against investments. I’ve no idea how such matters are handled here. In due course I might downsize.

Hi @Helenochka, we’re contemplating moving to Strasbourg after August 2026, so would be interested in hearing more about your flat!

You’d have to go quite a bit higher. We”re at 700m and used to have 4 great seasons, but now summers are very hot and winters damp.

Yes, a fair point - although I cope better with warmth than cold on the whole. And Cantal is a touch further to drive from UK, which is a (lesser) factor.

We used to live in a river valley on the PNR Millevaches at over 620 metres. It was blisteringly hot in the summer and could be seriously cold in the winter (-25c🥶). At least in the North, the temperatures variance isn’t nearly as massive.

Morning Alfred!
Are you already in the area?
If so, it would be great to meet for a drink or coffee - even if you’re not interested in our particular flat.
It’ll break my heart to leave it. It’s big and old and airy, the neighbours are quiet and nice and the neighbourhood is delightful (quartier Tribunal).
We’re going to check out the UK next Spring to see whether we want to move there for our retirement. In which case we’ll sell up in Strasbourg.
PM me if you like.

Is Norwich back in favour again?!

Was too embarrassed to tell you but yes, it is!
Who knows. Maybe we’ll hate it on sight. Next Spring will tell.

All my problems would be solved if a bunch of SF stalwarts would just move to Strasbourg and promise to handle my husband’s paperwork if I snuff it. We could all support one another in our dotage. George, you would do the tax returns obviously.

The Morvan is pretty good value.

Think it’s all relative , we go up into the Cantal hills very often, particularly in summer and it’s invariably 2-3° cooler than our stretch of the Lot. Whereas Rodez (627m) is much hotter than us in summer and much colder in winter.

Are you selling up?

Are you offering?

We will sell up, but probably 8-10 years from now unless we have a strong incentive.

TBH there’s something special about the villages once you get up into the hills and woods. The last 2 hours of our journey is through small and medium villages and towns, touching Chablis, and driving down past Auxerre, and we get to see quite a lot of rural France. There’s very few that actually appeal as much as this area. It would be nice to be less than an hour from the sea, but I’m happy with this situation.

Where we are at 410 m it’s always 3 or 4 degree cooler than in the valley and higher up behind us at 900 m it’s another 4 or 5 degrees cooler. That makes a huge difference which is why I go up there walking in the summer months.

Hi @Helenochka,
no we’re still in Seattle area in the US. We’re going to stay here for another school year, but after that we’re free as birds. We have friends in Rosenwiller so have been to the area plenty of times. Would love to have a coffee, but it will have to wait :frowning:

That’s how we feel about our current house that we’ve lived in for 29 years, it will be super hard to leave!

You say quiet and that’s what I love to hear! Is the quartier Tribunal close to Illkirch-Graffenstaden to the South, or is the Poincaré/Kable area just to the North of the Centre?

I’ve lived in Suffolk in the past and would recommend the area to the East of Cambridge!

And unfortunately, I haven’t figured out how to PM you on this platform, could you explain?

Click on the person’s name, then click on “Message”…

doesn’t appear for me, unfortunately:
