Welcome to France where all second hand vehicles are sold for highly inflated prices compared to the UK.
I wasnāt aware of that; I would have thought that there would be better value in France. My understanding was that classic car values in most or all western countries have been weakening since the early ā90s, apart from prestigious models, and that this trend has only accelerated in recent years, with waning interest in older cars.
Maybe prices are becoming more buoyant due to an increasing proportion of people who are becoming disenchanted with modern ādriving appliancesā and long for vehicles that offer a more engaging driving experience are are more service & repair accessible. Good MGB models are being advertised in France for 18-30.000ā¬, while little Fiat 500s or Citroen 2CV are on the market for typically 8-12.000ā¬.
I only discovered last night a Youtube channel named U&Bangers&Cash. It appears to be a selection of the TV programme that you mention. In the episode that I watched, a 1973 Escort Mexico was bought for £27.500, £9 500 was spent on parts and paint, while a whopping £58k+ was spent on a few months of extensive bodywork repairs. The car cost over £93.000 in total; at auction it fetched just £40.000. The lesson here is that extensive restoration should only be committed to vehicles that are to be kept by the owner, unless a prestigious vehicle is being restored for resale.
