At least the family will be taken care of financially… 
In many jobs in the UK if you die during your tenure then your family will get an automatic pay-out. Doesn’t matter how you die…
Yes, “death in service” benefits are very common - it’s just life insurance really.

The wife will to get 80% of his salary until his (would be) retirement-age is reached and then she will be able to profit from his pension entitlement - so it is a generous/reasonable outcome.
