Jimmy Carter

First US president to reach 100 years old. Happy birthday to him.

Alive, anyway.

In the end he was a decent president - they need more like him and fewer like Trump.

He has set himself the goal of voting in the next election!

But for bad luck in the Embassy rescue attempt he might have gone down as one of the best. He always came across as humble.

Pass the peanuts Jimmy.

And he got a submarine named after him. Most (ok some) ex presidents get aircraft carriers, or targets as submariners call them.

How did his death slip by unnoticed, at least by me?

Lots of coverage on bbc.com news

Yes why did Gerald Ford rate an aircraft carrier?

Jimmy Carter was a good man, which is an acceptable epitaph for anyone but especially a politician.

He was in the Navy and served on one.
Carter was a submariner so he got a sub named after him.

Thank you - i didn’t know that! I was thinking that Ford’s Presidential career didn’t rate a carrier, but it makes sense now!

Presumably the USS Donald J Trump will be a refurbished Staten Island ferry.

or maybe not even that:

The very best photo from his state funeral; DJT and his wife are behind the stone rampart at right. The only people who did not put their hand over their heart when his casket was being taken out by the Marines? DJT and his wife. Typical.

You may not know this but Carter showed some signs of leadership early on.

When he was POTUS, I actually worked in the US Navy Nuclear Program as a civilian just after Rickover retired and just before Reagan was elected. And yes, I voted for Reagan, and probably would again under the same circumstances. Carter was really just unlucky and couldn’t seem to control the situation. He certainly proved to be a great man, if not a great president.

Trash.

The Alcatraz ferry would be more appropriate, or perhaps a rowing boat.

Somebody’s got a wicked sense of humour though, they finally name a carrier after a black male sailor, and choose one called Doris. :astonished:

Did you see that Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz? Perhaps he’s anticipating a long stay there and wants to make sure they have gold taps.

(Not going to happen BTW, Alcatraz was closed as a prison in the 60s because it was too expensive to run).

Don’t see why it should be. Dump the nastiest prisoners you have there, take steps to increase the shark population and put an ack ack gun on the nearest mainland to deter helicopters, apart from the once a week one dropping food in a net.

Oh, and some bird feed as well. Is Burt Lancaster still there?

My daughter and SIL have visited twice now. They said at the time you could still feel that atmosphere of no hope once they stepped inside the buildings. It would take a lot of money to bring it upto today’s acceptable standards if the human rights people stir the pot. Did you watch the film The Rock with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage when terrorists took it over to plot their destruction of SanF and how they had to find a way in under the place. And then there was the Clint Eastwood film Escape From Alcatraz where he was an actual escapee, it was a 70’s thriller with Patrick Magoohan as the vindictive governor.

Constant maintenance for one thing - salt water is bad for steel bars.
