When I was writing The Private Lives of Hertfordshire Writers I had the privilege of interviewing John le Carre’s oldest friend the late Dick Clements who lived in Sarratt. Lovely man. Lovely memories. Le Carre had written a short story about him called The Draper of Watford. In it Le Carre revealed why he put his spy school in Sarratt.
